This Week: Charlie RobisonJohn KunzGodzilla Motor CompanyJoe Hayden

As longtime owner of the world-renowned Waterloo Records--"Best Record Store" in every single one of the Austin Chronicle's annual Reader's Poll--it could be argued that John Kunz enjoys Austin's and perhaps the world's greatest record collection. Below he shares five of his favorites, and for a paltry sum, welcomes you over to his place (Waterloo Records) to take one out on permanent loan.

  • Rahsaan Roland Kirk reissue, "Aces Back to Back" (32 Jazz). This is a four-CD set reissue of his early and mid-'70s Atlantic records. Not really a box set, as you can get them individually for eight bucks apiece--"Prepare Thyself to Deal with a Miracle" in particular. Kirk was the foremost circular breather and in his prime was able to play three instruments simultaneously. Amazing stuff.
  • KGSR's "broadcasts vol. 7" (KGSR) with the Texas Tornados on the cover. A 2-CD set (on sale Friday, Nov. 26) with 30-plus artists. Get 'em while they last. Once they're gone, they're gone.
  • Everyone needs to go get "Doug Sahm and Band" (Atlantic). Bob Dylan, Dr. John...hard to beat.
  • The new Beck, "Midnite Vultures" (DGC). This guy's great. The last one was more personal, this one's for the people. A follow-up to "Odelay."
  • Cowboy Junkies' "Rarities, B-Sides, and Slow, Sad Waltzes" (Valley Entertainment). The title says it all.

Could a band with a name like Godzilla Motor Company do anything but rock? The kind fellows from GMC offer up the following tips and tricks of the "metal" trade.

Sound engineer Joe Hayden, who has worked with the likes of Bruce Robison, Jimmy Buffet, and Dave Matthews, offers a glimpse into his keen musical insight with these five eclectic recommendations. Note too, that his musical prowess is not limited to mixing board buttons and knobs. He shows some marketing skills with a "surprise bonus track" offering.

  • "Hit Men: Power Brokers & Fast Money Inside the Music Business." Excellent book about the inner workings of the music business.
  • Astor Piazzolla's "Luna." Tango music. Tosca based themselves on this stuff.
  • Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan's "Shahen-Shah" CD (Atlantic). Top to bottom, one the best grooves I've ever heard. Absolutely one of the best CDs I've come across in my life. The one he did with Eddie Vedder is trite when compared to this.
  • The Grays' "Ro Sham Bo." Great album-listening experience. Made up of members of Jellyfish and the Eels, The Grays only made this one fine record.
  • Hugo Fattoruso. Incredible Uruguayan musician. Herbie Hancock's keyboard player of choice. The baddest motherf**ker I've ever worked with.
  • --Surprise bonus track--Edward J. LaFong's "LaFong, Edward J. Performs 'My Way'" (Luck Records). This CD single is an absolute must for any record collector worth their proverbial salt. God bless Sammy Allred! .

I caught Charlie Robison while he was playing house with his Dixie Chick wife Emily in their new San Antonio digs. At least I hope it was her voice I heard on the other end of the line add Fleming and John to his list of recommendations. Catch Robison this Saturday, Dec. 4 at Gruene Hall as a third of the Lucky Dog Records "Unleashed" tour. Both labelmate Jack Ingram and labelmate (and brother) Bruce Robison will be on hand for this live recording show.

  • Arkey Blue at Arkey Blue's Silver Dollar in Bandera, Texas.
  • Fleming and John.
  • Patty Griffin.
  • Johnny Cash's "Live at Folsom Prison" reissue.
  • Poodie's Hilltop Bar and Grill. Willie's Poodie, that is. [For those who don't know, Poodie is both owner of the Hilltop and Willie Nelson's longtime roadie.]
