While it may seem impossible to escape the home team's influences, there are many spots that strive to accommodate the devoted sports fan. These diehards are rewarded with yummy food, drink specials, and most importantly, a place to cheer and boo and all that.

8565 Research Blvd, Austin, TX 78758 (map)

This new sports bar on the block, with multiple flat screens that always show sporting events, is a fans' dream. A svelte, focused menu offers tasty, toasted sandwiches, all types of bar snacks, and custom pizzas. Thirsty? Dozens of beers are on tap, and the staff are excellent mixologists. Fresh fruit and herbs are used to make house cocktails, including rarer additions like basil and muddled strawberries; check for weekly specials when certain classic drinks become dirt-cheap.

    912 W 12th St, Austin, TX 78703 (map)

Reportedly, this Swiss chalet-esque bar calls the Steelers their team. But with over 52 TVs in the house, there should be something for everyone. Thank the recession for the decision to make every hour of every day the bar is open to be a happy one - meaning, the drink specials never end. Getting a fresh pint of good beer will never be more than $4. Well drinks are always $3, and bottles of Lone Star, always $2. Food is basic bar fare, but always fresh and tasty and never traditional. The cheesesteak sandwich is made with queso, and burgers can be California-style, with avocado and sprouts, or Tex-Mex, with chipotle mayo and roasted jalapenos.

  3. 3 4.5 Star Rating: Recommended Third Base (Sports Bar & Restaurant)

    1717 W 6th St, Austin, TX 78703 (map)

With an established fantasy football team and thirty TVs - including one in the women's bathroom - this bar bleeds orange. And even in the heart of 6th Street, known more for entertainment than finer dining, the menu here is surprisingly sophisticated, serving grilled Ahi tuna sandwiches with raspberry chipotle dressing, spinach salad with roasted pecans and cranberries, and the old-school classic Cobb salad.

  4. 4 4.5 Star Rating: Recommended Posse East

2900 Duval St, Austin, TX 78705 (map)

A stone’s throw from UT's football stadium, this spot is essentially Longhorn ground zero - and what may seem like wallpaper to a hapless student may seem like a bounty of gastronomical delights to the uninitiated. Tacos are fab and authentic, burgers hearty, and the fish and chips come with malt vinegar. Avocado fans, try a large guacamole taco. Heaven on a plate.

  5. 5 3.5 Star Rating: Average Champions Restaurant & Sports Bar

300 E Fourth St, Austin, TX 78701 (map)

Another venue in which to root for UT, the menu here implores all to bring their "Texas-sized appetite." That is good advice. Nachos and quesadillas are massive. The onion rings - jumbo, naturally - some with BBQ sauce and a chipotle dip. Frito pie is lovingly assembled. Baked spinach and artichoke dip is creamy and rich. The deep-fried standout here is a too-rare sight in Austin: dill pickle spears, breaded and fried, served with ranch dressing for dipping.
