Sit at the bar that overlooks an open kitchen and ooh and aah over show- stoppers like the Richardson Farms pork belly and the parsnip and ginger soup finished with bowfin caviar. Don't forget an order of the melt-in-your-mouth gruyere popovers and check on the seasonal specials.

200 Lavaca St, Austin, TX 78701 (map)

One of Austin’s newest kids on the culinary block is located downtown in the W Hotel. The food is locally sourced by their very own food forager and the cuisine is fresh and also artfully presented.

David Bull of Driskill Grill fame has created a buzzy place for both casual dining and fine dining (and drinking!) at the base of the prestigious Austonian high rise in downtown.

    1000 E 11th St, Austin, TX 78702 (map)

This dining gem comes to us from the family that runs Mi Madre’s on Manor Road (where the breakfast tacos and migas have been reeling us in for more than 20 years). This son and daughter-in-law extension is run by executive chef Edgar Torres and his wife, Christina Torres. Zandunga, which means elegance and grace, is fittingly named; the quaint bistro serves authentic interior Mexican dishes prepared with elegant European cooking techniques.

  5. 5 Haddingtons

    601 W 6th St, Austin, TX 78701 (map)

Occupying the former Thai Tara space, Haddingtons is an American tavern located on bustling West 6th Street. Executive Chef Zack Northcutt (Mulberry), prepares cuisine best described as American with British influences. The drinks here deserve equal accolades.

  6. 6 Backspace

507 San Jacinto Blvd, Austin, TX 78701 (map)

Brought to us by Chef Shawn Cirkiel (formerly of Jean-Luc, currently at Parkside), Backspace is literally located in the backspace of Parkside. Chef is turning out traditional Neapolitan pizzas from a Forni Cirigliano wood-fired pizza oven, along with salads and sides. Come thirsty; the all-Italian wine list is noteworthy.

Tyson Cole is spreading the love and sharing his talents in our sister city, Houston. Don't fret, he may move there temporarily to get the sushi rolling, but he'll be back before too long when he hands over the sushi knives to a new executive chef yet to be named.

1917 Manor Rd, Austin, TX 78722 (map)

Just announced this little red house on the Manor Road welcomes a new chef, John Galindo. Handmade pizzas are still the menu staples, but look for fun additions like chicken-fried meatballs and seasonally-changing bruschettas. Yum!

The always-illuminated sign that read Katz's Never Kloses went dark. A staple in Austin for over 30 years whose pastramis on rye will be missed. Guess we'll have to venture to New York for the original deli that never kloses.
