While the year's end clearly sets the bar for imbibing of bubbly, never forget: Sparkling wine sets a festive tone at any time of year, or day, for that matter. Brunch, that magical morning meal, allows champagne to be a vehicle for vitamin C, when knocked back with a little juice. During the Sex & The City run at the Alamo Drafthouse, four distinct champagne cocktails were created for each of the show's heroines; but the drink is not just a girl thing. It's a year-round, all-day, super fun and delicious thing. Here's where to get some good ones, on the upper-cased eve or beyond.
After a month of holiday-related indulgences, it is traditional to amass a list of resolutions, some of which are staunchly obeyed. Others, not so much, but with a little luck, the unbending law of resolutions can be read into liberally. To keep safe and sane, work on goals gradually, and read between the lines (or into them) to make even the strictest guidelines a little fun. (Photo: Courtesy of smg-photography.com)
This year has been a stellar one to open an innovative restaurant in Austin. In spite of a sluggish economy, many openings in 2009 have been instantly successful, delicious, and true to the roots of this city. One caveat: No food trucks or mobile vendors in this list, though at least 10 notable ones have opened and made an impression this year. And now, in no particular order, find the best restaurants in Austin of 2009.
While there are many beloved spots in which to have a few drinks or see a few bands, this year has been busy for new venues carving out their niche in Austin's already overflowing watering hole scene. While looking back it is impossible to ignore the many venues that freshly opened have sustained a loyal crowd right off the bat. With best wishes to the older, best-of, classic bars and clubs in town (we love you, Beerland!), here's a list of the top ten new bars and clubs (as of 2009) in Austin. Here's hoping they make it past the first year to become old standbys.
The crushing rush of the party season starts in late fall, and shall be in effect until the Big Game (which is in February, non-jocks reading this). This means that Thursday nights typically spent on the couch watching The Office will now be spent in the kitchen making cheesecake for that office/friendly potluck gathering. Call it laziness, call it a tasty-fake, call it going to the store to save what's left of your dang mind, but picking up a freshly made dish is not cheating when it comes to potlucks. If you're going to take credit, do it right by picking up goodies at Austin's best.
Locals know: Even the best stuff, including music, culture trips, food and drinks can be snagged for cheap--way cheap. Dirt cheap sounds so tawdry, but everyone reading this should be able to scrape up a dollar. Free is for another day, but here you will find amazing treats and trips, all of which will only cost one George Washington. Here's to letting the dollar's drop be Austin's gain. Considering that shopping on a budget is often at the expense of inconvenience, many folks thank high-brow boutiques and one-stop shop department stores for simplifying the quest for gifting goods. However, since paying more for an item than what it's really worth is hardly something a respectable Austinite would do, we're offering up a rundown of some of the best bargain bins worthy of unabashed penny pinching...or buying twice as much.
