Just tried out Shanty Tubes, with some friends yesterday! It was very busy, maybe a bit of organized chaos, in some ways, but what do you expect on a busy hot summer day. We had so much fun. The staff was friendly and funny. The river was low, but it would have been low if we went there or next door! The Horseshoe trip had enough water to float my a** ! I recommend the Shanty, and I will certainly be back again!
You have much better options.
Before leaving the house our group discusses whether to float the Guadelupe or Comal. We were aware the water was higher at the Comal, but liked the possibility of longer float beyond the short "horseshoe loop" at the Guadelupe. Our group decided on the Guadalupe if we could float beyond the horseshoe. We chose Shanty since we had an online coupon and the location is good.
After parking we wandered towards the desk. There was no order or system involved and employees in yellow shirts seemed to be everywhere doing very little. Once at the front desk a rude, older woman greeted us with with a snarl. She asked for the number in our group and we told her. She gave us a total cost which included a $20 deposit (paying the deposit did not bother me, but it should be noted that very view tube rentals on the Guadalupe or Comal ask for a deposit). I asked her for information on the float trips and water levels. She said, "Ok" and turned around and charged my debit card.
One my card was charged she told us that all extended floats beyond the horseshoe were not offered on this day due to the lower water levels. Since my group was dissappointed by this news we decided we would prefer not to float here, and would like our money back so we could go to the Comal. Upset by this respectful request, the woman snapped, "I already took your money, I can't give it back." I brought my case to the manager who told me it is Shantys' policy to never grant refunds under any circumstance.
I wonder how many businesses could stay in business if they took your money at the door and then dictated to you exactly what you have purchased?
Add this incredulous policy to the lack of signage on the river, lack of directions and information from any of the countless yellow-shirted employees, a shuttle that literally drives you across the street, and a general disregard for the customers well-being (remember they do not discuss the conditions until AFTER they take your money). As a person simply looking for a good time on the river, I did not deserve the treatment I received at Shanty. If you're reading this, you probably don't deserve it either. You have many more better options.
Very poor all the way around. This business gives the entire community an undeserved black eye. 1 star simply due to the nice location.
