The rooms reflect the Art Nouveau style of the 1920s in their use of the stained glass ivy window panels and the decorative plaster corn and wheat motif of the miller's trade. The restaurant is open for both breakfast and lunch and features baked items--breads, pastries, pancakes and waffles--as well as sandwiches, soups, salads and our specialty, biscuits and gravy.

The museum displays pioneer flourmills memorabilia as well as Guenther family photos and remembrances. Of special delight to collectors are the Dresden china anniversary plates. These were made in Germany until WWII and were given to customers of the Mill.

The River Mill Store offers gourmet baking mixes, custom stoneware, cookware, and other gift items. The rooms themselves, once formerly the music room and bedroom, feature fireplaces and distinctive tile work that are part of the original decor.

Editorial Review for The Guenther House – by Greg Melikov

The Scene
History buffs are in for a treat; this building dates back one and a half centuries. The original two-story home was completed in 1860 next to founder's Texas Milling Pioneer business. Both thrive today, including the restaurant, which opened in 1988. Check out the company store and museum. Decorative fireplaces are on all three floors, and there are two views of San Antonio River. There are also three tables for carryout patrons and a terrace roof garden for private parties (built in 1927).

The Food
Food is prepared fresh daily. Taco soup isn't too spicy, and boasts plenty of vegetables with chips. Biscuits are light, not too doughy. The beef stew is thick and heavenly. The most popular dishes are champagne chicken enchiladas with tossed salad and chicken salad plate with seasonal fruit. Portions are generous, especially pastries that taste as good as they look. The pecan spicy bun could feed two.

The Guenther House has a great ambiance, great long time servers, and never changing recipes. I have been going to this restraunt since i was 15 i am now 23 i have gotten to know the staff very well and they provide the best service due to there circumstance. Thr house is very old so there is not very much space to work but the food will be excellent and hot with out a doubt. They dont and have never sold alcohol and the House is not handicap accessible "no two walls connect to add an elevator". What to try: Biscuits and gravy "amazing and big' if too big try the 1/2 order chicken salad sandwich has always been my favorite and before you leave take a coffee cake or cinnamon roll with you they are to die for....

Pros: great food, great servers and atmosphere

Cons: parking

We ended up taking the food to-go because the wait was an hour and 45 minutes! We decided to take the food across the street to a park bench. When we go back, we'll probably do that again. As for the food, it was yummy. The Bacon was really thick, and the Waffle with fresh cream and fresh berries was gone in seconds. If you have plenty of time on your hands... dine in. If not? Get it to-go!

Top-of-the-line dining and service in an historic setting where the San Antonio River appears as it did in the 1800s.  See the full editorial review.
