Blah, Bland...not special at all...
by Talewey at Citysearch
A few months back my husband and I (new to Bastrop at that time) gave Maxine's a try...we weren't impressed and sort of forgot about it. So today, needing some lunch and in the mood to give it a second try, we went to Maxines.
Let me tell you, it just isn't anything it claims to be... I had the Monday special, Pot Roast, I ordered mine with green beans and mac n' cheese. Nothing could have tasted further from home made. The roast was bland, I mean really bland. No flavor at all, just real wet...kinda gross actually. The green beans were the real-thin type, straight from a can, and again (the theme of the entire meal) no flavor. The mac n' cheese is exactly what you get from KFC, I mean exactly like KFCs to the point where you would not be able to tell the difference...just awful to be marketed as a home-made meal Mecca...it's a real shame.
My husband had the chicken salad sandwich, and truly couldn't even eat it...it was that bad.
We really aren't picky eaters, we love to support the local joints whenever we can...but, Maxine's is a total sham...a waste of time and money. Just because you serve tea in a mason jar, you still need to make some great-tasting food...
We would never ever waste another moment or dollar at Maxine's.
False website claims
by Groupmom1 at Citysearch
Our group went to Maxine's on Main because their website siad they use fresh, in-house prepared food and local produce. We could not find a single example of this; the onion rings were clearly out of the freezer, the green beans from a can, the sweet potato fries were crinkle-cut, and the mac-and-cheese - if it was homemade, they used a can of cheese sauce to make it. The iceberg lettuce and squishy pink tomato were typical restaurant-supply fare, which is a shame because the Bastrop Farmers Market just down the road is featuring great tomatoes now.
The food wasn't bad, it just wasn't good, and certainly not as advertised.
The Friday night music was good, and the area is great. It was hard to appreciate all that in the disappointment over the difference between the food quality that was promised vs. what was delivered.
Maxine's on Main - The Authentic Flavor of Bastrop, Texas

Go early - breakfast at Maxine's is my favorite. All the locals are there from prince to postman. Its easy to find and worth the short detour off Highway 71 to Main Street in the Historic section of Downtown Bastrop. If you can't make breakfast, Friday nights feature local live music and the best chicken fried steak and catfish in Texas! Infact, check out the whole area - you'll love it. PS: Sunday mornings are sometimes packed but worth the wait!
- Pros: quirky atmosphere, honest food, good people
- Cons: it's addictive!

Service and food has improved. I am a regular for breakfast. Friday night venue is fabulous-live music, good food and dancing in the aisles. Many regular customers and a popular gathering place for local leaders/politicians. Owner and employees generously support the community.
- Pros: Where the locals eat and gather
- Cons: not open week day evenings
Great Food & Atmosphere!

This is a wonderful place for families or just a quiet lunch with a friend. The fried green tomato sandwich is excellent. It is casual and comfortable, yet upscale in the food choices - while offering a nice kid's menu. My iced tea came in a mason jar which was HUGE! It was a novelty to drink out of but I could not finish mine. Perfect size for the thirsty person! I have heard the live music venue in the evenings is fun too! I will be back for dinner and music! Great Place!
