From The Owner of Black's Barbecue

About Black's Barbecue

  • Open 8 days a week
  • Less than 30 mins from Austin
  • Homemade beef and pork sausage

There is something timeless about the feel of this relaxed cafe with Texas license plates lining one wood wall and Longhorn horns decorating the others.

No wonder: It has been run by the same family since 1932.

Owner Edgar Black, the son of the founder, still does things the way Daddy did, using post oak to indirectly smoke the meat, which is seasoned only with salt and pepper. The moist, deep-flavored brisket cooks for 24 hours, the good beef-and-pork sausage is homemade. Hammy pork ribs, chicken redolent of smoke. Made-from-scratch sauce is thick, red and sweet. Sides are numerous.

Best Barbeque Sausage in Texas!!!. Black's is a taste of home for me! I've not lived in Lockhart, Texas since 1969, but I'm able to remember my friends and neighbors and all those "down-home" memories each and every time I'm able to order the best barbequed sausage I've tasted ANYWHERE!! The staff and management and their dedication to both quality & tradition will keep me coming back for memories year after year!! Thank you ALL for great taste, great service & great memories!!

Best BBQ in South Texas!. I live in So Austin and don't mind the drive for some good country B-B-Q at Black's. Food is great and staff are friendly. They have all the fixing's and dessert too! The hours of operation are long enough to make it in from a hard days work or week-end day trip. I have frequented this establishment for 6 years and have never been dissatisfied with the food or service. Owners support local sports.

Best BBQ In Texas!. My family is contantly asking for BBQ from Texas so I have visited many BBQ places from Houston to Dallas and from Midland to Palestine. I tried Kreuz and Smitty's but ever since finding Black's I don't go any where else! My family loves Black's BBQ and when I go home to Chicago I cannot get through the door without first handling over Black's BBQ!

Best BBQ in Texas. I have eaten at hundreds of BBQ places in Texas, and Black's has no doubt the best smoked brisket! It taste like it has been smoked for days!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I would totally recommend this place!

It is only one block off 183 on Main Street, totally worth the trip to Lockhart.

Excellent brisket among stiff area competition. They don't have prime rib (point: Kreuz), but the brisket here was the juiciest I've ever had. This place has sides and sauce, which is one thing that this place has over Kreuz. Kreuz does not have said condiments which in my opinion are critical to thorough barbecue enjoyment. Also the sausage, ribs and turkey were all well-smoked and delicious. I waited for over a half hour in a line that stretched out the door and up the sidewalk before getting my sides and then ordering my meat, and feel it was worth it. I, too, came on a Sunday (and an empty stomach), but do not regret my visit. Wet barbecue isn't just for Yankees after all, and the basic mustard-based sauce at Black's is a fine complement to the smoky, succulent meats. Great barbecue here. One tip: watch out for $3 beers.

This place shows 2.5 stars on the intarnet, and that just ain't right. This is one of the best barbecue places I've ever been to, and I do love barbecue. Also try: City Market in Luling, Smitty's in Lockhart and Kreuz in Lockhart (Sauce and side lovers beware! We are omnivores.) That is all.

Kreuz's was closed, so.... A friend and I drove down to Lockhart to experience the legendary Kreuz's barbecue. Silly us, we went on a Sunday, when Kreuz's is closed. There's a billboard for Black's BBQ, so we decide to find it and see if it was open. Well, it happened to be one of the 8 days of the week the place is open, so we were in luck.

Serve yourself sides are the first thing you pick, I got the broccoli salad with little red onions (very good). I chose a quarter pound of brisket and a quarter pound of pork loin. You pay for the food by the cutting station and get your drinks in another room. Serving drinks was a bored and easily annoyed goth girl who was the standout reason not to go to Black's. Seemed to pretend not to understand anything I said.

The brisket was good, but a bit too fatty, and the pork loin a touch dry.

Not a bad place to go if other places are closed, but I certainly think there are better places in Lockhart to get BBQ.

not the best in the area.... i go to austin a lot and i always drive down to smitty's in lockhart to eat and also to bring back a few pounds of brisket and sausages to LA. we went to black's one night because we got a late start smitty's and kreuz were already closed. anyway, the people who work there were pretty nice and easygoing, but the brisket and ribs weren't anywhere near what i was expecting. brisket was a little dry and plain and the ribs were tougher than i expected. smitty's is the best in town (and anywhere else) and kreuz is a close second. i would put blacks at a distant third...

Brisket to die for.... Damn good Texas BBQ in the the BBQ Capitol of Texas, Lockhart!!!!

I love this place, and even though I live in Los Angeles, CA, I dine here whenever I am in the Austin, TX area.

The smoke flavor on the meats is awesome!! Why can't we do this kinda BBQ in California???

OK, but there are better. A lot of people have recommended this place to me, but most of those people were from out of town and would come there out of habit. Having been to most of the other BBQs in the area, Black's rates as one of the better ones, but far down the list from the top. It is definitely over-rated and over-advertised. The food is very good, but the layout of the restaurant is awkward; you have to put all the accessories on your plate before you get to the main course. This tends to back the food line up. The dining area is also dark, as if it was intended for you to not see what you're eating. This place hasn't made any improvements to keep pace with the times, and it shows.
