The Scene
This mansion was constructed in 1883 by the co-founder of Southwest Texas State University. It was converted into a B&B in 1984, and through the years has expanded to include three additional historic buildings. All provide homey accommodations with unique touches ranging from a marble garden tub with gold-plated fixtures to 12-foot ceilings and fabric-upholstered walls.
The Details
Each room is named for a river in Texas, and all offer a distinct style, from the romantic Victorian look of the Medina Room to the dark, dignified atmosphere of The Sabinal. Two corporate apartments are aimed at business travelers and feature several business-friendly amenities. One of the inn's unique attributes is its presentation of theme weekends. Among the most popular are Murder Mystery Weekend and Writer's Workshop Weekend. In addition, the innkeepers will prepare a gourmet picnic that can be enjoyed along the San Marcos River or in the privacy of your room.

We stayed in the Sabinal room in the Young House, across the street from the Main House. The room decor was pretty, although the bedding seemed old. It was very homey and relaxing. The claw-footed tub was a nice touch. The only drawback to the nights was that facing a fairly busy street, the room was sometimes loud with car noises. Breakfast was absolutely scrumptious, with friendly service. This is a great getaway, close to the outlet mall and river activities. Just beware it's on a busy street, not in the country.
