In Short
Scholz Garten was founded in 1866 by August Scholz, a German immigrant and Confederate veteran who proudly labeled the place with his German heritage. Located just two blocks from the stadium, it's the site of UT football's first victory party, and still home to many rowdy Longhorn fans. It's also home to the Wurst Band, a 33-member brass ensemble that has pumped out German music since 1871.

Our organization books the outdoor stage at Scholz regularly for a special meeting with skit performances. We always have a lot of fun, and the folks working there are great to put up with such a large crowd. The food is ok, although we mainly go for the atmosphere. If there isn't parking available on the street, there's a garage just a block away.

This place use to be the crown jewel south of campus, and it has since taken a dive. I recently went back after graduating from UT in '97, and I was surprised to see how a UT institution had been turned into a Denny's. What happened to the old Scholz's?

It's a Longhorn tradition and worth doing at least once. After that, find another place. The UT crowd for football games gets pretty crazy and I personally would rather be somewhere else.

When to Go:
While it is always a good spot to catch a sporting event on TV, there is nothing quite like the crowded social scene after a UT football game.
