In Short – This Austin institution has a split personality. On one hand, you have the pub, with its large selection of draft beers. On the other hand, you have four distinct bar areas that accommodate a variety of crowds. Regardless of particular interests, this is a quintessential place to start out the night on famed Sixth Street. Expect to see a lot of college students and tourists soaking up the suds and the Southern-fried rock.

not the best

I like the atmosphere and the upstairs deck at Mae's but this place isn't one of my favorites. The live music downstairs is horrible and it takes forever to get a drink. On the weekends a domestic canned beer is $4 (lame) but the staff is always nice. This bar is a good place to head to after you're already drunk.

A Gem on 6th

Just did the tour of 6th and this place was the highlight of the night. Friendly bartender, decent prices (unlike Buffalo Billiards and Nunos), great atmosphere. My brother summed it up best for the crowd, "like nerds meet the women of Baywatch."

Recommendation for an afternoon on 6th St, in general, and Maggie Mae's in particular: Good little happy hour, currently $2 for wells and $2 for beer, but ck w/ the bartender; and they have a free WI-FI (after all, this IS Austin). It's a cool open air patio, w/ a full bar and a good breeze.

The pub opens at 3pm daily, but the everything else opens at 9pm Thursday to Saturday.
Happy Hour:
There are several irregular happy hours throughout the week. Call about the occasional late-night Thursdays specials, where domestics and wells go for $2.
