In Short
Cafe Mundi's eclectic entertainment matches its gypsy feel: a former adobe office building, redone beatnik style. The fare includes great coffee, soups, sandwiches, smoothies, international specials and a Sunday brunch with Belgian waffles, beer and wine. Working folks can enjoy Cafe Mundi's warm, dark confines at lunch, be revived by the change of scene, then return Wednesday night in alter ego guise to read their works in progress to fellow poets.

I used to love this place and then ONE incident ruined it for me and I will NEVER go back. I witnessed one of the employees change her child's soiled diaper in the indoor dining area during the end of lunchtime. She just plopped her kid right down on the FABRIC seating surface and jumped right in. I didn't realize what was happening until I noticed a smell behind me, turned around and saw her changing the kid right in front of me. I got up, walked out, called the appropriate authorities (for some reason the naming the actual dept is prohibited on this site) and have never come back since. When people ask me if I want to go there, I simply shake my head and tell them don't ask unless they want to know...they usually want to know, so I tell them. Those folks tend to want to sip their coffee someplace else afterward. I hated to slam the shop like that, but that kind of behavior, with the other employees, glancing over and saying nothing is unacceptable in a place where food is served...hell, most places. Maybe their unsanitary attitude/habits have changed. Maybe that was a one-time thing. But I don't think I will ever be able to get that "one-time" out of my head. It was simply disgraceful, unsanitary and mind-boggling that others would tolerate that behavior. I didn't even stick around long enough to see if the mother washed her hands afterward, but if she was unabashedly changing that kid in the dining area, I have a feeling she wasn't exactly clean in other aspects of her life either...just a feeling based on that first impression...which wasn't good.

Food was overpriced and below expectation. I read all the 4-star and above reviews so I definitely expected more. It's tucked in a neat little east side town with cosy patio, nice for hanging out over coffee on a sunny day. The person taking our order was rude and seemed like either she didn't want to be there or she didn't want to bother with us. It was our first time so we asked two questions about the menu and she seemed annoyed, and walked away right after we paid. The waffle was decent. For $2 you get 'fresh seasonal fruit' which consisted of 2 blackberries, 3 soggy raspberries, and 4 blueberries, with half-melted whipped cream on the side. (Fresh seasonal berries in Texas in Dec? hmm..) The whipped cream was sour, I didn't want to bother to risk getting sick. The migas dish was simply poorly seasoned scrambled egg, with stale El Milagro chips on the side, old grated cheese (it has those white specks on them) and salsa. I thought migas means tortilla pieces scrambled with the eggs? Plus a small mocha, all that ran us $17. We left still hungry and dissatisfied, then immediately went to Austin Java to finish our brunch. I really want to like these local hidden establishments but this had to be our first and last visit there. What a pity since location was nicely secluded.

Driving there it felt like it was WAY out there, driving past so many warehouses/etc, but once I got there, WOW! The patio is GORGEOUS and wonderfully pleasant to sit around on. The drinks were good, the food I had was tasty. All around, I'd say this is worth the drive out there! Parking was easy when I went, but I could see it being harder if there were music/other event going on.
