What People Are Saying About El Azteca Restaurant

In Short – Right next to the I-35 corridor, El Azteca is close enough to downtown to attract a major lunch rush. The various dining rooms in the renovated house fills up fast with with politicians, law enforcement officials and downtown business folks. This is one of the only Tex-Mex places you'll find with a solid vegetarian menu. Other popular entrees include a spicy mole enchilada, chili rellenos and cabrito.
Editor's Tips
- When to Go:
- If you're in a hurry, it's a gamble. The lunch rush can sneak in and make seating slow, but the servers do their best to make up for it and it shows.
Great Mex, Good Prices
by bc3 at Citysearch
This Austin landmark has probably been serving Mex since before I was born. This place is definitely about the food, atmosphere is 60-70's. Try to avoid looking at the mangy goat heads while slurping down some of the best Mex in town.
When we went, the salsa was super-spicy & delicious. Queso was ample & also quite tasty. I had spinach/mushroom enchiladas - a little light on the mushroom, but delicious. I sub'd the habanero sauce - if you like spicy, I highly recommend it. Cheese & beef enchiladas were very good too.
Prices are very reasonable: Queso, 2 lunches, extra tortillas, water to drink - total tab: $19.

We have enjoyed El Aztecca for many years and enjoy the Cabrito and the great Margaritas. The service is friendly and you feel welcome! Just thinking about it makes me hungry-think I'll go there today!
- Pros: Great fresh food, good service and reasonable prices--good parking!
- Cons: nothing!
Real Texmex, Real Good

We've been frequenting El Azteca for more than 20 years & consider it the best TexMex restaurant in Austin ... but it also has some interior cuisine dishes & an extensive veggie Mexican food selection.
It's a family-run place where the service is friendly, with lots of personal touches. We drive cross-town, passing up probably a dozen decent TexMex restaurants, to return again & again to El Azteca. For out of towners, it's highly recommended as a place to get a good "slice of life" of Austin the way it ought to be.

El Azteca is the greatest
by bacchusatx at Citysearch
Guys seriously, El Azteca is the best Mexican place in town. Jorge, the current owner/manager is the son of the founder and the family still does most of the work around the place. If you never had a Mexican abuelo then go to El Azteca and find out what you've been missing!
