Been there... no need to go back. There must be some draw to this restaurant because there were plenty of people there, I just don't know what it is.

I tried this place because I purchased a Groupon for $30 worth of food for $15 and by the website description, I thought it might be a trendy, upscale restaurant -- a good place to take a date. So I took a date and we were served two decent plates that were on okay deal for $15, but not the $34 or so plus tip that it would have been without the coupon (carne guisada plate and plate of 5 shrimp, fries and toast and two NA drinks). IF it was an upscale restaurant, that might validate the price a little, but there was nothing upscale about it. The booth we were seated at had burns and gauges in the tabletop. The menus were wet and moldy, and the waiter could have been more attentive and friendly. But basically, I won't go back because it was overpriced and dirty.

Too kid friendly. I was in Nuevo Leon (E. 6th Street) one evening, and had the misfortune of sitting next to a table of at least 20 - mostly soccer moms and 40 year old frat boys. Besides being very loud and inconsiderate of others in the restuarant, they let their kids run totally amock thoughout the entire place. The place was very busy, and the wait staff did everything they could to dodge these brats. as they ran around throughout the dining area and bar with out any supervision. I totally blame the clueless parents, not the staff. I'm all in favor of making a place comfortable for families; unfortunately, on this particular evening, it was a little too comfortable.

Don't expect to get everything you ordered. We called in a to-go order, a taco plate, a 1/2 dozen tamales, an order of nachos, and a chile relleno plate. The order was repeated back to us on the phone, with a total included. The person who went to pick up the food was stuck waiting at the bar for the order for 20 minutes, and when he got back with the food, the entire chile relleno order was missing, but the guacamole salad that came with the relleno order was not missing. We called back and told them they'd forgotten a plate, and they tried to tell us that we didn't order it. We told them that the salad that came with the plate was with the rest of the food, and we ended up having to send someone back to argue with them in person. They didn't give us a receipt so we had no way of proving to them that they took the order.

Austin's best margaritas. Best margaritas in town by far. Love their marinated fajita meat ,especially the chicken. Try their ponchos w/ fajita meat.

This place is terrible. Bad service, bad management. Go somewhere else.. Don't waste your time and money here. Horrible service. Was there with kids and couldn't even get a round of water delivered to the table after asking the disappearing waiter several times and even the manager. Had to get up and get water from the bartender. Took 50 minutes to get food to our table. Our order was messed up. All the kids meals came with fries and no one brought any ketchup..even after asking repeatedly. Had to send my 5-year old up to the bartender (the only person in the restaurant willing to help) to ask for ketchup. The manager became combative with our complaints which changed it from just a bad restaurant service experience to a laughable situation. From his perspective it was our fault for not asking for the nachos to be delivered as appetizers.. "You didn't tell me you wanted your nachos delivered as appetizers." I don't know how this place stays in business. Upon leaving there was also some very suspicious discrepancies with our bill but I wanted to get out of there so fast I didn't care anymore. Stay away from Nuevo Leon.

This legendary East Austin Mexican restaurant is tops for students, families and groups.. The Scene
Nuevo Leon is friendly and family-oriented; teenagers scurry around refilling salsa bowls while an older staff takes orders. Bright walls and separate dining areas define the large, cavernous space, and roving mariachis add to the atmosphere. The bar area is frequented by neighborhood diners that are content with chips, salsa and margaritas and never seem to find their way to a table in the dining room.

The Food
Don't expect interior cuisine here, as border fare and Tex-Mex classics rule the menu. Tex-Mex combos include the #9--a mountain of a meal with a chalupa and beef enchiladas engulfed by warm queso. The oft-ordered "old fashioned" tacos remain crunchy on the outside and redolent with spicy, smoky ground beef inside. Hearty eaters can opt for a thin-grilled asada steak, served with guacamole salad and a cheese enchilada or a classic T-bone steak, grilled to order.

Hits: Live mariachi music lends an authentic border vibe while the potent margaritas, spicy salsa and delicious grilled meats complete the experience.

Misses: The cathedral-like main dining room seems to have fewer tables than it could fit and hour-long waits are typical on busy nights.

Worst service, even worse management. We went for my sister's and friend's birthday, their was about 15 of us that went. At first their was about 10 and when 5 showed up we told the waiter he set up another table to fit the table we already had. One of the managers came over to him and yelled at him in front of us for putting another table with ours. (Unprofessional) It was very uncalled for and made everyone uncomfortable. We hung around a little longer had a few more drinks, when out of no where another manager comes over and asks how much longer we were going to be there. We all still had drinks on our tables that were no where near close to being empty. We looked at him and said are you serious? He stated well I hope you all had fun, but we really need this table.. Are you kidding me? He just smirked and walked away. I told him NO one had ever run us off especially when we are if anything making them money. We paid quickly and left out of anger. I WILL not ever host a birthday dinner ever! I couldn't stand that place before because of bad service, but was willing to give them a try once again.. BUT now I know why I refuse to go their again!!!!

Love This Place!. I've gone to Nuevo Leon several times and have always been happy with the food and drinks. Some nights are more crowded than others but usually I get seated promptly. If there is a bit of the wait they have a bar area with tables in which you can get a bowl of salsa and a margarita while you wait. The fajitas are good and piled high so you can share with a friend and the prices are very reasonable. They have some of the best - and strongest- margaritas in town so I limit myself to two. This is also a great place to go before you go downtown due to the close proximity to 6th st.
