Editorial Review for Waterloo Records and Video – by Citysearch Editors

In Short
Owner John Kunz opened the store in 1982 and the local music scene hasn't been the same since. The crowded, narrow aisles include the largest local music sections in town, along with a listening station featuring many Austin musicians. College kids and Austin locals fill the white 6,400-square-foot shop, particularly on live music nights when beer kegs flow and high-caliber performers such as Lyle Lovett, Sheryl Crow and Billy Bragg hit the stage.

Greetings, To anyone who doubts that time machines and record stores are mutually exclusive, or in fact may not exist, just, for your own clarification, travel to downtown Austin and go to Waterloo Music. In a nanosecond you can travel seamlessly from 1958 to 2008 (and actually have kind, informed, pleasant travel attendants to guide you on your journey....I've even gotten great suggestions from fellow searchers. Last night I found, on one my numerous trips to this mecca, a MINT copy of Uncle Tupeloe's double album on 180 gm English vinyl...what a treat as I put it all on my Revox reel-to-reel for uninterrupted listening...at those times when changing sides or lp's just isn't the thing to be doing. I not only recommend it, if you do go, it is you misfortune...you will not find another, travel where you might. oilman

Pros: If you want it, it will be there or they will do a Cirque de Soliel act to find it

Cons: On Friday and Saturday afternoons, relax, have a valium and a cold beer, there may be a wait...so what...been to the airport lately?

As a music junkie I can tell you that if you can't find it anywhere else, you're ALMOST always assured to find it at Waterloo. They have a great selection of a ton of different kinds of music and I LOVE that they don't sort by genre, just alphabetically. In these days of blurred lines between genres it's sometimes hard to tell what section to look in. When it's all listed alphabetically it makes it a lot easier to find what you need. Yay Waterloo!
