What Our Expert Scouts Say

The Tavern

The Tavern's extensive pub menu, 12 or so TV screens and assortment of beer make it a favorite and reliable sports bar on North Lamar. Yummy burgers, salty pretzels and good ol' sports fans keep me coming back.

A cozy, old Austin bar with an upstairs/downstairs split: Useful when it's trivia night, and they sequester those folks upstairs, while you curl up with your Tarheels down. Remember to get a burger, which is served these days on warm, sweet, Hawaiian bread buns.

Clean Sports Bar and Great Service. Just wanted to give my favorable review to the very friendly staff at Tavern. My girlfriend and I coincidentally found ourselves in Austin on July 25, the last day of the Tour de France. After coffee at Seattle's Best, we got referred to the Tavern. With coffee in hand, we went entered the Tavern to find dozens of flat panel screens tuned to TDF. The wait staff was completely cool to us -- we didn't spend a dime, and yet we received nothing but courteousy in return. This isn't to suggest you loiter at the Tavern. To the contrary, come unwind and spend some cash. You'll enjoy it. If they were this friendly to us, imagine how well they will treat paying customers.

A Bit of Heaven. The Tavern has fantastic food. The chicken fried steak can satisfy two people! The wait staff is gracious and concerned about the patrons. The management makes sure everyone is satisfied.

Again a great place to go if you are really hungry!

Bad service spoils the evening. The service at our visit to the Tavern was just horrible! Our "server" would not stop by for thirty minutes at a time, so we couldn't place orders. When he did take orders, he only took them from half the table and then wander off. He also only brought half of the drinks and never came back with the second half! We talked to a manager and eventually got our missing drinks, but not before the manager had given us attitude.

I don't expect much, but with 18% gratuity automatically added to our bill (for we were a group of more than seven), you at least expect that you'd be able to place an order and then receive what you ordered in under 20 minutes.

Best place to watch the game. This place is hands down the best place to catch a game. They also have great happy hour specials. If you plan on coming to watch a game when Green Bay is playing, better get there early.
