Austin >Jeffrey's Restaurant
Great Food Poor Service. The food was great, from the Crispy Oysters to the salad and the Crab Cakes. Kudos to the chief great menu!!! However the exprience did not go so well. First we waited in our car for over 5 minutes until the valet came to take our car, then we walk in to wait 10 minutes before the host appears. He then explains to us that it will take some time to get our table ready. The sever was very short and seemed like she did not want to explain the menu. We asked for the special of the house and she said "everything on the menu is good." This was suppose to be a romantic date with my boyfriend and we planned our outing for several weeks in advance. The food was great but the experience was lacking personal attention.
Over rated. We made a special trip to Austin to eat at Jeffrey's because we've been reading so much about it in the Austin and Texas magazines. We ordered one of everything on the bar menu. First came the oysters with 2 sauces. I tried one of each and passed them along to 2 women eating french fries at the bar. They were mediocre at best.Next the salad, overdressed and under seasoned. Then came the cheese plate which had no flavor but was coated in salt, we couldn't even eat it. The steak tartare had no flavor so we asked for a small side of capers which the chef refused to allow the staff to provide. We cancelled the remaining items and tipped the servers very well, it's not their fault the food is lousy and the chef is pompous.
Best Restaurant Experience in Years!.
As always, I was greeted warmly as soon as I entered, and taken to our table. Our server was wonderful, non-intrusive, but quick with service. She also provided a description of each dish.
We ate from the Small Plates menu and each item was beautifully presented and full of flavor. The star of this evening was the Pickled Shrimp and Fried Green Tomatoes. The shrimp were perfectly cooked with a pickling that was not about acidity but about flavor.
If there is any criticism to be offered it would be regarding the Beef Short Ribs. Expecting the universal fall-off-the-bone quality, these were rather tough, though the flavor was still excellent.
I asked for several special requests and our server filled each one including a request for extra offerings with our dessert. As usual, the Chocolate Intemperance was superb.
Oh, and this note: I usually find the coffee, even at higher-end restaurants leaves a lot to be desired. Here, the coffee was flavorful and full-bodied.
I will return and in the meantime, I will dream about the Shrimp and Fried Green Tomatoes!
Gourmet Romance. I went to Jeffrey's on a date. Despite how busy the restaurant was, we still felt an intimate atmosphere. Every small plate and entree sounded delicious, but, alas, we didn't have enough room in our stomachs for everything. We ordered with the five-course tasting menu (short ribs, endive salad, scallops, veal, and chocolate temperance), crab cake, steak tartare, oysters octavia, and red snapper. All of the dishes were quite tasty, but my favorites are the red snapper (hands down), endive salad and short ribs. My boyfriend loves the steak tartare & its wonderfully paired herb salad. We definitely reccomend Jeffrey's for foodies, and especially romantic evenings!
the new chef they hired is fantastic. the new menu is exciting and delicious. this place used to be so over rated but i am happy to report that jeffreys is back!
favs on the menu:
new fried oysters, awesome pate and cheese plate, thumbalina or st johns salad, cauliflower soup with poached oysters!, and amazing scallops.
and at half price bar apps from 5-7, this is an elegant place to visit for those in the know.
Portions way too small. While I found the atmosphere above average and the food delicious, the portions are tiny and not worth the price. I would be happy to pay above average prices if I felt that the portions were adequate. We were with a group party and some of people were going to stop and pick up a burger on the way home. At $65 price tag per person no one should have left hungry!!
The reputation is the only good thing about this place.
My wife and I decided to go to the infamous Jeffery's restuarant for our 5th wedding anniversary because of the longtime fantastic reputation this place has. We drove up, and I kept checking the Navi to make sure we were at the right place because it is NOT in a very nice part of town. We found it and pulled up to the valet, very prompt and courteous. We walked into this hole in the wall looking place hoping for some incredicle decor, well this is what I saw: 12 tables in a tiny room, with very old looking floors, black drop ceiling tiles from the 70, pictures of what looked liked George Washington and wood paneling along the walls to match. We sat down still waiting to be impressed, and we immediatly noticed that we could hear every conversation in the room because it was so small. You cannot have a private conversation without whispering. We started with appettizers, fried oysters and the quail, both which were mediorce. We ordered the tenderloin and ahi tuna for dinner, while we were waiting we ordered a few martini's. Drinks were good, but at $11 per drink its pretty steep. We ordered another round and they took about 20min, paying that much at a fancier restuarant they should have arrived much sooner. The waiter did apologize and comp'd one of them. We got our dinners, and the steak was decent, perfectly cooked and had a tasty brown sauce to it, nothing fantastic. I had the Ahi, and it was pretty good but it should have knocked my socks off for the price. Dessert was akin to a Hostess cupcake, I'm not kidding. Want to know about the bathrooms? Think 70's, nasty flooring, sludge covered pipes, door lock that was rigged. I just can't believe how poorly this place is put together. They are a perfect candidate for an Xtreme home makeover, only problem is that they are probably making money hand over fist.
Our first impression was , valet was prompt, and hostess was prompt to seat us(w/reservations). Firs
Great Place for Special Occasions!!. Jeffrey's is a great place to celebrate a special occasion. The atmosphere is intimate without being fussy. We have lived in Austin for almost 10 years and we just went to Jeffrey's to celebrate my husband's birthday. My only regret was that we did not discover this place sooner. This was the best selection we could have made: the wait staff was extremely attentive and the food was even better!! We will certainly be going back soon.
Sinful Crispy Oysters!!. My husband and I eat here every New Years Eve or special occasion. They have the best Crispy Oysters in town! We have to order one for each of us. Thanks for making this our special place. I highly recommend Jeffrey's to anyone looking for a unique, upscale restaurant in Austin.
A great little place to go. I took a large party there but we could not fit into the rooms. So they set up a big table in the bar for us, and it was perfect. The food was good the serive was great, this is a place I would go back to. I think this is a good place to take a date.
