This 24 hour restaurant is a weekly must for most Austinites. From the pancake lover to the vegetarian to someone who just wants a good chicken sandwich -- everyone can be pleased at Magnolia.
Magnolia Cafe may be Kerbey Lane's diner doppelganger, but there is one distinguishing menu item here that I'd like to bring to your attention: Cornmeal pancakes. Smeared with butter, they're like eating warm cornbread muffins in pancake form, and they're not too sticky sweet, either. Then again, if sweets are what you crave after a long night out, feel free to douse them with bananas, maple syrup, and even chocolate chips -- Magnolia won't judge you.
Stopped by on Accident.
Got turned around near mopac (at rush hour -- heaven forbid). Ended up in stand-still traffic for so long that we decided to exit the highway. Saw The Magnolia Cafe and wanted to spend some time there while waiting for traffic to die down. I got the Greek Salad and it was excellent! I think my boyfriend had a hamburger but can't remember which specifically, only that he really enjoyed it. Portions were much bigger than I was expecting.
Waitstaff wasn't very friendly (and was somewhat neglectful) but the food was so good that I'll definitely be back.
good pancakes, awful service. We went to Magnolia's on Sunday around 12:30ish. My boyfriend and I were seated at the counter, and we ordered pancakes and oj to go at 1:00 pm. We received a bill and paid at 1:10. We waited 20 more minutes and still no pancakes. Our waitress had disappeared after we paid and tipped her (I don't think we made her mad since we usually tip 30% or more). At 1:30 we asked another waiter if they forgot our order. We actually had to point out the order we saw in the kitchen that had been waiting for quite some time. We eventually received our food to go 35 minutes after ordering and left without seeing our waitress again.
Love this place since i moved here. I've been here a dozen times. The food is good as usual. This is the place I usually take out of town friends, which the always agree that it's the best breakfast place in Texas. On occasions, the waitress at the south location seems a bit worn out, lazy, and perhaps slow. She may just be new, but that doesn't stop me from eating there.
Good local flavor. First time to the So. Congress location. Read one review about poor service. Boy did they get that right. I always feel good about tipping fairly. Not with this service. A fair tip would have been for our waitress to tip me!!! Probably some of the worst service I have gotten in many years. Will try the other location next time.
See now I hate Houston. So I'm 35ish and went to the Magnolia cafe on Saturday night around 11:30. We had been drinking a little down the street. I got one gingerbread pancake and we shared the Mag mud. Both were awesome. The entire time we were there we listened to the Beastie boys. I can't think of a place anywhere else where you can get pancakes at that time while also listening to the best music ever. Made me want to pack up my entire life and move to Austin. Good job.
Great Place.
Solid food, good selection, kicks the **** out of Kirbey Lane/Denny's/IHop.
For those worried about the bad reviews concerning service - If you live in austin you should be used to the smug/overeducated waiter by now, so unless you are taking your grandparents and/or parole officer to lunch, go get the best migas in town.
Good breakfast but not great (by a long shot).
This is a solid 4 star breakfast/lunch place. The food is good and the service good but nothing here is great. I mean the subpar wiat room next to the sometimes stinky bathroom - not to mention the limited parking and the wait...well you expect more.
The specials are definitely where it is at as I feel the are the freshest but I am a fan of the taco breakfast.
Not huge portions and occassionally the wait staff will be smug; what is up with that in Austin? - anyway the wait has never been too long and the food service is quick so you are eating not long after you order.
Wish is was a more well rounded breakfast menu or at least the pancake/french toast was a little better than average.
My wife is a big fan of the the Queso Omelette.
I love this place. I have eaten here around 10 times and have never been disappointed. The food is great, reasonably priced and they are always open. I enjoy the way the staff remembers what I like and that they are so friendly. I have been working my way around the menu and can recommend the following dishes: love migas, huevos rancheros, corn pancakes (I have had them throw in jalepenos and also blueberries, ginger pancake (I added bananas). I also have tried the specials and had a great stuffed pepper the other night. I also like their sense of humor (the t-shirts read "sorry, we're closed' and also that they sponsor NPR.
One of my favorite restaurants!. This is one of my favorite restaurants in Austin! The Caspian is the best dish and so is everything on the breakfast menu (breakfast is served 24 hours a day)! If you're going to go for dinner or for breakfast on the weekends, be prepared to wait..but it's worth it!
great food. Don't spend your money at places like denny's. Go to magnolia cafe. Good service, great food, reasonable prices.
