Editorial Review for Maudie's Cafe – by Malin Hansson

In Short
Decidedly strip mall, but with the added bonus of a shaded, fan-dominated patio. The parking lot usually contains both sleek BMWs and rattling pickups. Expect at least a 30-minute wait on most nights--it's worth it. The food's classic Tex-Mex: smooth-as-can-be queso and never-ending baskets of chips. Favorites include Ruth-Ann enchiladas, cheese enchiladas topped with carne guisada; and vegetarian fajitas with corn tortillas and sour cream.

What to Drink

Maudie's house margarita, on the rocks with salt and lime, is top-notch, as are the frozen and flavored varieties.

Maudies Lake Austin is one of my all-time favorite Tex-Mex restaurants in Austin. They have consistantly good food (with a few misses here and there), and with a few exceptions, I have experienced generally good service. I get a lot of take-out orders from them, and the only thing I would suggest is that they improve on fulfilling take-out orders. Many times I have gotten home only to discover they left off the rice and beans that I ordered, or put in flour instead of corn tortillas, or whatever. Not enough to get upset over, but still, it's just one more little hassle. I forgave their constant mistakes when they were going through all the construction and remodeling - now it's time to step up to the plate a bit more. But all in all, a good Tex-Mex place!

Pros: Relaxed atmosphere, reasonably priced.

Cons: Take-out orders can be wrong on a regular basis - check it before you leave.

I went there with my friends and sister few nights ago, we were seated promptly and the atmosphere was very fun, although I was COMPLETELY not impressed with the service. We had at least FOUR different servers and just getting another bowl of chips took forever. I've been in the service industry for awhile and understand if it's busy or they're shorthanded, but COME ON there wasn't one "sorry" for the slow service. Granted everyone's food was yummy except the salad I got was pretty weak for for their "special" salad so. Go on and try it out maybe it was just that day but beware the servers :)...
