Maudie's is like the beloved abuela of Austin, feeding her ninos way too much food and shouting "escuchame!" over the dinner table, shushing us for prayers. This is all to say it's been here forever, our Maudie's, and we never tire of her or her Queso Diablo -- queso tinged with spicy jalapenos. It's the best way to wake you up out of a dreary hangover (but don't tell Abuela Maudie).
For Tex-Mex, it is hard to beat longtime Austin favorite, Maudie's. I like the original location in Terrytown. You can even plan to take a dip in nearby Deep Eddy pool while you are in the area.
BEST QUESO!.
People call me the queso queen because of my love of the ooey gooey cheesy goodness. I have to say that Maudie's hands down is my favorite queso of all time. Seriously. Try it!
I love everything about this place! Spicy salsa, delicious margaritas, even great breakfast tacos! If youre a cheese lover go for the Josie's enchilladas. If you are a big meat-eater get their juicy, flavorful fajitas! Oh, and don't forget the golden sopapillas to end your meal! :)
Austin classic Tex Mex.
Maudie's is a must-go for all out of town guests. Best chips & spicy salsa in town! Lake Austin Blvd location started out next to a laundromat, then expanded, took over the space & remodeled. We fondly refer to it as the "West Austin Country Club".
Austinites know their Tex-Mex & that's why Maudie's has expanded to 3 or 4 locations.
My fav - cheese enchiladas with con carne. Fajitas are very good - fajita tacos are a cheaper option & just as good. My husband goes for the Tio Chon or the Mexican Special. For lighter fare, the tortilla soup is a stand-outl
Fab, reasonably priced margaritas.
Diners include hung over frat boys, families with screaming babies, all manner of West Austin folks - young & old. Look for the stucco wall of booze bottles that changes colors.
Best Service, Nice Bar Staff, Great Food!. So, I love Maudie's. There are several locations, but bay far the "Original" is my fav. They have added a new drink to the menu called a "Skinny Rita." And boy is it good! It has maybe 1/3 of the calories in it that a reg. rita does, and it's sparkling...DELICIOUS! And it's a really hip place as well. If you want to show your friends or family a rest. that is AUSTIN, bring them here. The staff are very cool, and nice . They are definitely a mix of Austin....And the manager floating around looks happy all the time, smiling and friendly....I give it an A ++++++++++++
One of my favorite Tex-Mex joints!. Maudies Lake Austin is one of my all-time favorite Tex-Mex restaurants in Austin. They have consistantly good food (with a few misses here and there), and with a few exceptions, I have experienced generally good service. I get a lot of take-out orders from them, and the only thing I would suggest is that they improve on fulfilling take-out orders. Many times I have gotten home only to discover they left off the rice and beans that I ordered, or put in flour instead of corn tortillas, or whatever. Not enough to get upset over, but still, it's just one more little hassle. I forgave their constant mistakes when they were going through all the construction and remodeling - now it's time to step up to the plate a bit more. But all in all, a good Tex-Mex place!
No so bueno service. I went there with my friends and sister few nights ago, we were seated promptly and the atmosphere was very fun, although I was COMPLETELY not impressed with the service. We had at least FOUR different servers and just getting another bowl of chips took forever. I've been in the service industry for awhile and understand if it's busy or they're shorthanded, but COME ON there wasn't one "sorry" for the slow service. Granted everyone's food was yummy except the salad I got was pretty weak for for their "special" salad so. Go on and try it out maybe it was just that day but beware the servers :)...
dont get it. Not sure why this place is so "cool" - been around a long time. Big with the UT crowd. There are much better places to eat mexican. Not bad - but honestly nothing special. Staff is fine - kind of the typical Austin weird, too cool for school crowd.
One of, if not the best Tex-Mex in town.. I go almost as a regular now for lunch. I love this place! One of if not the best Tex-Mex in town and the other locales serve the same great food.
Great service & atmosphere, food just so-so a little disappointing.
We visited the W. 7th street location for late brunch. Although the service was very friendly and more than accomodating, we couldn't help but be a little disppointed. We have found many of these reviews to be on the money; however this time we have to disageee. The food was on the bland side and needed to be kicked up a notch. The food also took along time even though the place wasn't even cloise to being 1/2 full (the staff was still attentive though).
Austins diner had better breakfast taco's and Chuy's had a better lunch menu. We will most likely return to give it a 2nd shot and try other items due to the location & service, but we won't be in a hurry to do so.
Great Food, Amazing Service to the Gluten Free Crowd.
I've tried most of the Maudies locations and consistently found their food and service to be outstanding. As someone with Celiac Disease who has to avoid wheat/gluten, I have found their servers and managers eager to help me find which menu items avoid these ingredients.
I didn't think it was possible for my opinion of Maudie's to improve any more. But last week they were a sponsor of the 2006 Moonlight Margarita run benefiting the town lake trail foundation. Maudies catered the party afterwards and were able to provide a meal of gluten free fajitas with corn tortillas despite having, oh, about several hundred other guests to feed all at once. I had sent them an email in advance and received instructions of who to contact once I arrived at their buffet line. It worked out amazingly well.
Kudos and sincere thanks to Maudies!
