Family-friendly hamburger chain with fair prices, accommodating services and 1950s flair..
In Short
This chain restaurant's orange-and-white A-frame buildings dot the Southern coast, from Florida to Arizona. What's made Whataburger grow since its first burger stand opened in 1950 is its commitment to custom orders--the restaurant is happy to fill special requests, as promised in the motto "Just as you like it." The signature five-inch patties and buns--an inch larger than most other chains--have also hooked loyalists to their burgers and chicken sandwiches.
Worst meat patties in Texas.
I started eating Whataburgers in Harlingen, Texas, in the mid-60s. They were always special, the flavor unique, piled high with chopped onions, lettuce and tomato. They just tasted a certain way, much better than any other fast food burger. And the meat patties were larger than their competitors. What was not to like?
But something happened in the early 90s. They went cheap on their meat patties. They are full of chewy gristle, and pretty tasteless. It's like they grind cardboard up in their meat. Every time I would order one, I would have to discharge these chewy chunks, nearly every bite. The flavor of the toppings is still the same, but the meat is inedible.
Anyone who continues to eat these burgers has low standards for meat quality.
I make a mean burger, according to all who have eaten my creations. They are simple, but prepared correctly, using the correct meat/fat ratio. My patties are flat and thin and I use butter-toasted buns. I consider myself a burger expert.
Best Burger in Town. This is the place to get fresh food. It's not on a conveyer belt waiting for you to come and get it. They wait until you get there, find out what you want and fix it the way you want it. This is truly a Texas tradition that Texans can be proud of. The secret is...there are thousands of them, not just in Austin. This Houstonite is not sure why they didn't make the list there!!!
Doesn't Deserve a Review. I'm shocked that Whataburger is even listed in Citysearch, let alone given such a high rating. For all of the ENDLESS waiting time for a simple burger, it seems as if the meat has a secret ingredient which makes it get cold between the time you take it from the counter back to your table. Also, the meat is tasteless. The fries are horrible, too. Cool and tough every time. Sorry to step on some toes here, but about the only people who like Whataburger are also the same people who claim that Bluebell ice cream is the best on the planet. (Another myth of galactic proportions.) Namely: Texans.
Best Fast Food Hamburger and Fries. Let's face it. If you want to stick to your diet, don't eat here (or at any fast food hamburger place for that matter). But if you are going to BLOW your diet at a fast food place - make it Whataburger. Their hamburgers and french fries are a cut above the rest. They are a nice, solidly Texan establishment, so if you don't like them you must be some kind of yankee commie type person that likes Gorgonzola on your burger...still I digress. Their burgers are larger than the rest, and their formula is perfect. Nice wide burger, but flat - mustard, not mayonnaise-onions, pickles, lettuce and tomato. It's actually a lot like the hamburgers from snack bars - like at the bowling alley college student unions. They are also open 24 hours, so they make for good late night muchies!
