Best Rosca de Reyes! Open 24hrs and has free wireless. I just had to praise their Rosca de Reyes. My family had to celebrate El Dia de los Reyes before Jan. 6 so we special ordered one. We were pleasantly surprised. It's the fanciest rosca i've had all my life in terms of both flavor and looks.
good bakery - avoid the food. This place is a bakery first, and a tiny restaurant second. For a late night taco, I think it would probably be great - although havent done that. Would not suggest for lunch - its just a little too rough, the food that is. Taco's a real greesy, chalupas were ok. What is excellent is their baked goods... very tasty and authentic. Overall - not a place to eat - but definitely a place to get tortillas, cookies or some other items.
Lousy. The people working there were horribly rude and the food was lousy. The tortillas were old and cold, and while they were homemade, they werent anything impressive. The chicken was dry and overcooked and way to spicy. The potato and egg was decent though.
24/7 cheap eats. La Mexicana Bakery is the only place I know of in Austin that sells delicious Mexican-style tacos at all hours, day and night. The food is hot, fresh, and inexpensive. The tortillas are hand-made, often while you wait. Try any taco with lime and cilantro - yum! In addition, there are two giant bakery cases, brimming with goods. Where else can you get an entire sackful of cookies and pastries for less than four dollars? Located on South First street, this is a great place for south-side residents to grab a bite. (Also good for sopping up the damage you did on Sixth Street.)
A classic Mexican bakery, holding steady while all around it changes..
In Short
The glass-fronted baker's case stretches across the entire room and is stuffed with cookies, empanadas, doughnuts and muffins. The dominant sound is that of the Spanish language--both by the employees and by the two large screens broadcasting Mexican television. The cookies come in green, red or chocolate-covered. Pumpkin or sweet potato empanadas are popular snacks. Cakes come in three sizes and are limited to chocolate, vanilla or the lip-smacking tres leches.
