Best place for maternity needs and baby gifts – I have shopped here for a baby gift and was extremely pleased with the selection and practicality of all their merchandise. I am impressed with the knowledgeable staff and their meticulous mindfulness to providing products that are non-toxic to babies and the environment. You can be sure that every item they stock has been well researched and reviewed for safety, efficacy & durability.
The employees in this store provide the utmost in customer service. They are always friendly & more than willing to provide accurate, up-to-date information on every topic from pregnancy support belts to nursing issues. They provide a lovely nursery room for young moms to nurse their babies in a comfortable rocking chair, and also provide the free use of their special scale which measures down to (I think!) 1/10 of an ounce. That way, you can weigh your baby before & after nursing to see how much milk the baby is actually getting with each nursing.
Overall, a very nice store. Good people & good products. It's also very clean!
Maternity/Nursing Boutique Unbiased – I've been a customer of S.A. for all three of my pregnancies. This store does carry a large selection of items, but they are over-priced. You must walk in realizing that you're paying for one-stop shopping. Also, prepare yourself mentally. You must walk in realizing that you are going to be in an uncomfortable atmosphere, and that a couple of the older folks working there are very proud and can behave without humility. But if you prepare yourself (and can pull off an internal eye-roll) then you'll get the job done and get out. They do NOT carry the newest things. I was bummed they don't carry milkies. You'd think a specialized nursing boutique wouldn't miss that one! Otherwise, this is just where you go for your supportive undergarments and a darn good fitting. We all want to support those mom and pop shops. Just be aware Mom and Pop are grouchie - maybe we all would be after working among bras and hormonal women day in and day out. But they do deserve the low reviews as well.
Fantastic Nursing Support – I learned of Special Addition after giving birth at Seton - I was looking for a place to rent a clean, safe breastmilk pump. Not only did I find a great Medela Lactina pump that worked perfectly for me, but a great source of support from their staff. I had a tough time with nursing, and popped in from time to time to get advice from their lactation consultants on staff as well as weigh my baby before and after a feed to see how much he was taking in. Do take advantage of their scales and expert advice - they welcome it in the name of encouraging breastfeeding. I also was in the area a couple of times and needed somewhere to nurse my son, and they were more than welcoming of me to use their very comfortable and clean nursing room. That was SO helpful for me when I was out and about and Baby started screaming for some milk - I didn't have time to make it home, but did have time to duck in there. Whew!
I recommend this store highly - drop by when you get time and meet their super knowledgeable and helpful staff.
Great lactation consultants/selection of products...Rude owner – I have visited Special Addition several times over the course of three pregnancies. The lactation consultants are so wonderful and helpful and the store carries many hard to find products for maternity and nursing. This would be a five star review if based only on LCs and products carried by the store.
Unfortunately I met the owner on my last visit. I came in looking for a specific maternity product (only sold by Special Addition in the Austin area). The owner bad mouthed the product, tried to sell me an extremely uncomfortable product at twice the cost, and made rude comments about my body in the dressing room. After I told her that I was not carrying multiples but I was having my third child, she said "well, the old body just isn't what it used to be."
The owner should refrain from making tactless comments about the bodies of her customers. She should really consider staying off the sales floor. Based on the owner's abrasive manner, this would be a zero star review.
Since 1994, Special Addition's goal has been to provide exceptional products and caring service. In my attempt to fit the recent reviewer of my services, I guess I missed the mark. While remarks can often be interpreted in different ways, I do apologize for any insensitivity to her feelings that day. We offer 8 specialty garments for 1st, 2nd or 3rd pregnancies & for women carrying multiples. My intent was not to sell a more expensive one but rather to guide her to one for her specific need.
Best place for slings & nursing products – I love this place - a lot of wonderful women who will take a lot of time with you. Also, you can come back and ask more questions. For nursing moms - they can fit your ever-changing breasts into a comfy bra. Excellent support with breast pumps. They'll give multiple lessons with slings - as your baby grows you can return for new helpful hints.
