Editorial Review for Mi Casa – by Jackie Potts

In Short
The small entrance off South Congress is deceiving, as shoppers discover they've stepped into an extensive Latin American import emporium (16 rooms, 3,600 square feet) that features everything from specialty home furnishings and antiques to works by local artists and artisans. Mi Casa has a variety of furnishings ranging from special hardware, iron sconces and one-of-a-kind light fixtures and chandeliers to larger architectural pieces such as mission doors. There's antique furniture from Mexico, as well as reproductions and custom furniture.

Mic Casa is a fantastic store to visit and get ideas. The manner in which they present their collection is fun and artful. However, for many of higher end items, their prices are the highest I have come across: for example, their talavera, copper basins, and furniture. These products are available elsewhere - maybe not all in the same place, but 1/2 or a 1/3 of the price is worth the trip to another store. (I have purchased items when Mi Casa has 1/2 off sales on slightly damaged items - this is a good time to buy from them) Also, I believe the staff is definitely un-Austin - not going to go out of their way to say hello when you come into the store.

Pros: Excellent selection

Cons: Higher than competitor prices, unfriendly staff

I was fortunate enough to receive a bag of their Citrus Spice potpourri as a gift. When you walk into Mi Casa the aroma is heavenly. It makes you "happy, happy". They make their potpourri on the premises which adds to the uniqueness. I brought my gift into our office and the whole demeanor of our office lit up! Co-workers raved about the scent and admitted it put them in a better mood. Go get some and you can be "happy, happy", too!

Pros: variety, pocketbook prices

Cons: parking
