Take a ride back in time when entering this border style restaurant that has been bringing authentic Mexican food to Austin for over 50 years. Low level Tejano music helps contain the atmosphere. The walls show off historically significant murals with warm, dark, colors and red Saltillo tiles truly bring the old world sense of decor into the 21st century. By being directly across the street from St. Edwards, this location has been a favorite of students and parents alike but patrons come from all over town, including the eastside. Plates are large and most options are combination plates…
THE BEST EVER!!!!

This restaurant has been our favorite for 20+ years!!! You can't go wrong with any of their menu choices. If your a hot sauce fanatic like me you will definitely not be disappointed. It's to DIE for!! All of their food items including tortillas and chips are hand made. The staff is very courteous and the atmosphere is very relaxing. The owners take pride in their establishment and it's like going to see family when we go there. Give it a try and don't listen to any negative comments on this blog. They have the BEST cheese enchiladas in all of Austin!!! You won't be sorry. Oh yeah...one more thing...they don't use any preservatives or MSG. IT'S ALL NATURAL and ALL HOMEMADE AUSTIN!!!!!
- Pros: Best Hot Sauce/Chips and Enchiladas...everything!
- Cons: None
A++ Cheese Enchiladas
by dkmaustin
As a native Texan, I have to comment on the person who said the cheese enchiladas are terrible. I'll bet that person is not from here. First, cheese enchiladas SHOULD be soft and creamy, not like a lump of melted cheddar. Melted cheese is a bit greasy and again, it should be. The combination of the gloriously soft and tasty cheese with the perfect chile con carne is the very, very best in town. The other food is great too, but nobody else gets the cheese enchiladas as perfect as El Gallo.
The service is friendly and prompt, even when they are very busy. I've been in many more locally praised and expensive restaurants in town where the service is both terrible and snobby at the same time!
This restaurant is a great value!!
Great Go-To TX Mex Joint!
by lahrlett
I LOVE El Gallo. Their chips and salsa are great. The salsa actually has a spicy flavor to it and it doesn't taste like a can of tomatos. I LOVE thier cheese enchiladas. They are greasy and cheesey and hot the way an enchilada should be. it is never crowded and the drinks are pretty good and cheap. The parking is great too!
- Pros: Fast seating and service. Great, cheap eats and drinks. Good salsa.
