The eponymous Fran used to be married to Dan, and when they split in the '70s, they divvied up their hamburger stands accordingly (hence, the four Dan's in town). So, who flips the better burger? Here is what we know: Fran's serves a proto-Sonic classic hamburger, with a pleasing mess of crunchy vegetable toppings (no sad, wilted lettuce here). But the real gem is the Hickory Cheeseburger, served on Jalapeno Sourdough: Smoky, hot, and decadent.

I have eaten there 100s of time and never had one bad experience. I am sad it closed down since it was in a convenient and fun location.

Great burgers and fried mushrooms. We saw Fran's on the food network and decided to try it ourselves. They have the BEST hamburgers and fried mushrooms my family and I have ever had! My kids are not fans of hamburgers, but they loved the burgers at FRAN's. I got the jalepeno cheese burger and my husband got the a cheeseburger, both we absolutely delicious!

Best Fried Mushrooms in Austin!.
My family has been going to dans/frans for years. Don't get me wrong, I love Dans hamburgers; but I will make the drive from Buda just to have Frans friend mushrooms. They are not overly battered unlike some places, and are bite sized. The ranch they have there compliments it well.
For awhile Frans had tooken away the mushrooms, you better believe I was there protesting it!
Most def worth the drive. Staff is super friendly.

great burger. This place has one of of not the best burger in austin for the price. My wife and I can eat there for under 14 bucks. Shockingly the same as dans it just tastes better ( I dont get it either) Not a huge fan of there fries (there alittle to greasy for my taste) but I go there for burgers not fries. If anyone vists Austin this is a must eat at place in austin. Great Milkshakes too

average food. Maybe they do have the "best hamburgers in Austin" but there wasn't anything spectacular about them. The shake was good. The service was prompt and employees were friendly.

A classic burger joint near to downtown and South Congress' hip and happening shopping district..
In Short
Located in Austin's so-called "SoCo" district, Fran's is a traditional burger-n-fries greasy spoon in south Austin. At Fran's, they serve burgers, with or without cheese, in three sizes--oh, and onion rings or fries. Maybe a shake or a soda, but your options are limited to chocolate, strawberry and vanilla. There's nothing fancy at Fran's, but that's the way the mix of business types and truck-drivin' men like it.

Best Burgers Around. The hanmburgers here are reminiscent of those homemade hamburgers done with handcut fries by your mother on a Sunday Afternoon. The fried mushrooms are the best i have ever tasted. The products they use are definetley fresh, crisp and tasty. You could go to a gourmet place to grab a burger, but why? Going to Fran's reminds me of Alice's diner a little from that T.V. show, the smell off beef frying on the grill is thick in the air, and the service is fast and freindly, if you ask me eating a burger is more than just the taste, whih is exceptional here,it's also about the attitude in which it is presented. Highly recommended!!!

Oh boy those burgers.
Best burgers in Austin. Greasy too. Don't go there on a diet but if you're not on a diet then you will be very happy with the burgers.
The must've recently cleaned their soda machine because it started tasting a lot better.

Best Burger In Town. Fran's is a great, greasy burger! They are very close to Dan's South (north isn't great), as they were husband and wife at one time. The thing that makes Fran's worth the drive is they serve fried mushrooms as well as fries and o-rings. Her burger also just tastes better.
