Matt's truly is the king of Mexican food. Aside from the enchiladas, the pecan brisket tacos and fish tacos are my favorites. The menu is massive and there's definitely something for everyone.
I confess I'm not familiar with Bob Armstrong, though I'm a fan of his work: The Bob Armstrong Dip at Matt's El Rancho, i.e. queso shamelessly filled with taco meat and a scoop of guacamole with salsa on the side, brings to mind a live-and-let-live character, a football coach who ate with gusto and invented this recipe during his retirement. That, or a hungry, stoned hippie.
Great ambiance,great service!.
The frog legs is great my Boyfriend never hand one and definitely loved it! The quesadilla is kinda oily but the guacamole salad is awesome.
I hope they would consider toning down the hotness of the salsa dip unless... they will not consider children as their valued customer when there is family who will decide to eat there.Myabe they can make a milder version of it for those kids and have gi problem...
YUMMY!. We are new to Austin and made a great find tonight! Love this place! Love "the Bob" too, as we found out the best cheese dip I have ever had is called here in Austin!
Best Queso!. The Brisket Bob is outstanding!! They have a great chicken chili rellenjo and pretty good service. It's usually always packed so be sure to go early.
Average Tex-Mex.
Started off great with good mexican martinis and margaritas. They carry a new tequilla called Chinaco Silver - very good!
Ordered the brisket tacos. The meat was semi-dry, like it had been sitting under a heat lamp all day. My gf ordered the vegetarian enchiladas, and they were above average. Very loud place with a relatively younger crowd. Cool atmosphere, but average overall.
Lousy Food! Not Worth the Wait or Money. Tasteless food, deafening and definitely not worth waiting for a table. To top it off, my stomach paid the price, too. High greasy/fat Tex Mex. Have had better fast food Mexican food. The place is definitely not what I remembered from 10+ years ago.
Horrible service, horrible wait, and horrible food!!. We waited over an hour for a table for four on a Thursday night. They didn't appear to be that busy. The waiter was clearly not interested in us as we waited 20 minutes for him to take and receive our drink order (which was tea and water). We ordered and the food was cold and tasteless. I will never recommend Matt's to anyone. Go someplace else!
Service was horrible and the food was close behind it.. We went as a group of 6 for my friends birthday and it took literally 20 min to get our drinks and the place was not even busy. The waiter was friendly but talked to us like we were 12 and i still couldnt figure out why. After waiting over 45 min for our food it wasnt even very tasty. This place was highly recommended to us, but i surely wont be recommending this place to ANYONE. Pick Casa Garcia, Little Mexico or La Feria over this place ANY DAY
Great authentic Tex/Mex.
Very good service and the waiters/waitresses are very knowledgeable on what they're serving from the tequilla menu to the food they were great. 2nd time I've been to Matt's and the 2nd time I've been to Austin.
Definitely a must do in my opinion.
Food was disgusting. We visited Matt's because it was recommended here and we were shocked. The food was inedible. Their margarita was ok, but neither my date or I could eat our food. The tacos were cold and the meat was sour. Will not be back.
TASTELESS MEXICAN FOOD!. Hoo Hum, taste - as if our meal came straight from the can! Salsa was HOT & SPICY - you could remove dried paint from your driveway with that stuff. Atmosphere was crowded & Noisy. Not sure why because most of the FOOD was tasteless. Their reputation needs to be redeemed. This place lost its touch when Matt passed away.
