Editorial Review for Threadgill's World Headquarters – by Nathan Stull
In Short
Both locations of this Austin favorite display beer signs and memorabilia from the famous Armadillo World Headquarters concert hall. The north location is where singer-songwriter Janis Joplin started her trip to fame. It still offers live music. Here you'll find Southern home cooking that would make your mother proud, such as chicken-fried steak, meat loaf and a huge veggie selection for herbivores. If one plate of food isn't enough, you get seconds of veggies free.

Threadgills does comfort foods the way comfort foods were meant to be done. Their water tasted like something had died in it, but everything else was wonderful...my waiter was a little scatterbrained, but it is monday and he was probably just hungover. mashed potatoes (veg.) are fabulous also the scalloped potatoes, corn, and carrots. :)
Pros: vegetarian friendly
Cons: gross water

It had been years since I went to Threadgills and had almost forgotten about the place. I happened on it for lunch last week and then went back yesterday and today. The portions are indeed a little smaller then they used to be but the price is still right. With so many places charging an arm n leg nowadays that is a real plus. My first time back last week I had a special of pork chop in a chipotle creme sauce w/mashed potatos and corn off the cob. ($9.95) The sides were generous, the chop just a standard size. The sauce could have used a little more chipotle but was good. Yesterday I had the thursday special, chicken n dumplings. Very good and only $6.95. It comes with a salad and of course rolls. Today I had the sirloin (8 oz) 2 sides and rolls. The sirloin was prepared as ordered. (med) For $11.95 I think it's a bargain. The quality has slipped a little from what I remember but it is still a great place. Based on how hard it was to park yesterday (across the street as their massive lot was full) a lot of people agree with me. The service was pretty good every time, but I'm not very demanding. It's getting harder and harder to get a decent lunch for less than $20 in Austin. Threadgills fits that bill. BTW, I'm a pretty good cook and am often hard to please. I ask that the food be real, the portions reasonable for the charge, prepared as ordered, and taste good. Go to Threadgills, it meets my criteria.
Pros: Good food at a reasonable price
Cons: none
