In Short – There's an earthy, side-of-the-road quality to the Green Mesquite, like a joint you'd find on a dusty highway. Booths, a jukebox and a checkerboard floor (all green, of course) create a casual vibe. There's live music on the patio, making the picnic benches back there the best seats. The restaurant serves up brisket, ribs, sausage, turkey, chicken and ham. You can order by the pound or get two- and three-meat combo plates with sides.
WATCH THE WAITERS AND YOUR CREDIT CARD!!!!
by austinhasareview
Just ate at the Green Mesquite tonight (Monday, August 10, 2009 at 9:25pm) and paid $11.08 for my meal and left a $3.00 cash tip. Paid for the meal ($11.08) using my Wells Fargo check card. I came home and did my usual routine of checking all transactions coming and going in my Wells Fargo accounts. Whoops! My waiter, listed on the receipt as "Brian", ran $13.30 on my credit card. I suppose leaving a $3.00 tip on an $11 dollar meal was not enough for him? It seems someone felt the need to charge another $2.22 on my credit card when I very clearly totalled it out as $11.08. I"m giving everyone in Austin a serious heads up. This is the second review I have ever written in my life but, if I am not mistaken, this is against the law. I plan on going over there first thing tomorrow morning and reporting it. Obviously, it's not the $2.22 that is the real problem but the principle. Watch out for your credit card receipts once they clear...make sure the amount matches.
- Pros: like the location
- Cons: my waiter rang up an extra tip....beware!!!!
So-so

This place has a ton of potential. It has a unique, no-frills, relaxed feel right on Barton Springs Rd. You can dine inside or on the patio and listen to live music.
But the food was pretty disappointing. I tried the brisket, pork ribs, and pulled pork. The brisket was pretty good, and the bbq sauce was very good. But the ribs and pulled pork weren't anywhere near the quality as a lot of other places in Austin. The fried okra was pretty good. Cajun rice was bland.
If you live in Austin, you owe it to yourself to try it at least once for the experience. If you're visiting for a short time, it's probably not worth your visit.
- Pros: Cool Atmosphere, Inexpensive
- Cons: Food Disappointing
Disappoints every time...

This place should be avoided if at all possible. Each time we've visited here the services has been terrible, the food was cold...subpar, and the staff is rude and dismissive. They have a back patio that has two sewage manhole covers and it smells of human waste and dumpster. It takes forever to get your food and when it does come it's either cold, room temp or burnt. There are several other BBQ resturants in Austin much more worth your while. Last time they charged us twice, both of which were NOT even the original bill amount. The restuarant itself needs to be cleaned, the bathrooms are nasty and the menus are greasy. We've given them more that several chances thinking it was just a one time fluke...they have proven us wrong several times over. On top of all this their jukebox is broken. I CAN'T EXPRESS HOW MUCH I URGE YOU TO STEER CLEAR OF THIS PLACE. PLEASE DON'T GO THERE...REALLY.
- Pros: easy to find.
- Cons: everything else.
