HORRIBLE. HORRIBLE service. On top of it all, my debit card was charged more than once, for over $200. I am STILL trying to get this resolved. All employees of Polvo's have been extremely rude, unhelpful, and have lied multiple times about managers being present. I was told, "Its not our problem, call your bank". I will NEVER be back!!
Lots of great places to eat, but this is not one of them. We stopped at Polvos two weeks ago. Far and away the worst food and service I have had in years.Enchiladas with rubbery tortillas and greasy congealed cheese. Inedible nachos and burnt potatos. Terrible, smug service. We used to love this place, but: Stay away!
Pay attention to the many bad reviews.
Have you noticed how many people have given the service a poor rating? Pay attention to that, it's for a reason! My friends and I went last Wednesday and the service was atrocious. We arrived at 7. The waiter took our order at 7:30. The food arrived at 8:45. Chip bowls went unfilled as did our water. Our drinks, however (which we all know is the fastest way to jack up the tab) arrived quickly... once, in fact, before we had even ordered them, and our bill arrived so quickly that it was impossible to not feel that we were being rushed out. We were a group of 10 but half the tables weren't even filled, and service like that is never excusable.
My fajitas al pastor were a lot of pineapple hiding very little meat, a thumbful of cheese, and barely any sour cream or guacamole (which was made to look much larger by the mounds of shredded lettuce under it.) My companion's chicken fajitas were so salty that everyone at the table who tried them choked.
I've read a lot about how Polvo's is "old South Austin", etc. etc. I've lived in this city my entire life and mediocre food and poor service aren't Austin. Don't be fooled. Spend your money somewhere worthwhile. Go to Guero's, or Maudies, or any of the other many fine Tex-Mex restaurants in this city. This Austinite won't be going back ever. And if you're not going to listen to me, read the other bad reviews.
If you're looking for a dive with great food. and that old South Austin vibe, this is the place. Dive-y, eclectic atmosphere with friendly staff, and authentic, interior Mexico food. Just their bowl of black beans is awesome, never mind the chile relleno, ridiculously cheap breakfast and yummy shrimp diablo. I'm starting to slobber just thinking about it.
Wanna be sick all day?. I'm a 78704 resident and have been eating at Polvo's for years. Over the past year I've watched Polvo's steadily decline. Yes, their parking lot is horrible (I walk). Yes, they have a wait most evenings (it is popular, you deal). But after the bad service I've been experiencing (once I had to leave cash on the table after waiting for 30 minutes for a check) and being horribly sick for 24 hours after eating there, I have to draw the line. At first I thought I drank too much (only 2 margaritas, but stranger things have happened), but then I learned that a friend also spent an entire day vomitting after dining at Polvo's. She ate there 2 days after I did. Coincidence? I think not. Polvo's needs to clean up their act. Literally.
worst fish tacos:. went there on a Saturday afternoon to try there fish tacos, service was bad,the menu said 2.99 each , I, was charge 3.99 each and was told it was due to a new price increase due to come out with the new menus thy had order. getting back to the tacos the worst ones to date we have try. long johns silvers fish in a taco is better than these . we will never go back. I gave them one star for there salsa.
Best "mexican food south of the river". Polvo's is a treat. If you want great mexican food, this place can not be beat. The staff is friendly, location great and clientle eclectic.
Scam Artists.
Ok, first of all... let me get this out of the way, Polvo's does have tasty food.
But now the bad part, I ate there during SXSW, and was overcharged by nearly 20 dollars on my credit card. Also, I left my hat there and went back the next day to get it, only to be told "Oh I saw it man" and after a quick look in some locker was told "I don't know where it's at." I guess they have never heard of a lost and found there. Also, I guess they think they can take advantage of out-of-towners during SXSW... which I don't think is right (Note: I DO live in Austin.)
Watch these people, they are S-H-A-D-Y. I, for one, will never eat there again, and would recommend that to others as well. Thanks for reading...
No Free Chips ?. Polvos is one of the South Austin Hole in the walls that does draw a large crowd. Having read some of these reviews it should be noted that you may be accosted by a drunken owner with his wee wee hanging out. And some, not all, of the wait staff will provide bad service. Having said that The food is good. Oh you have to pay for chips and salsa, big baby's.. never mind there are like 4 kinds of salsa and pickled carrots and jalape?os... who serves those anymore except Ninfa's on Navigation. I?ve had it all there and it is all good. Oh don?t sit inside you might get poked by a spring in your seat and want a free meal. So if you are a big whiney baby that thinks their doo doo doesn't stink you prolly shouldn't eat here. Go to Mars and see what real lame services is all about.
A Truly Horrible Experience.
I had heard so much about it and tried to not have too high of expectations. What I had was one of the worst dining experiences of my life.
The waiter brought us glasses of water and when asked for refills, the pitchers were 10 feet away, we never saw him again. I got up and got my own.
My wifes order was incorrect and she said that was OK she would eat what was brought because it took 45 minutes to get the food she had. What she had was horrible and when she told the waiter about it he said "Yeah, I usually dont recommend that dish." Did he charge us for it.....you bet he did. Did he get a tip.....you bet he didnt.
There were many other annoyances throughout the meal and I didnt say anything while there but on the way home decided to call the manager to let him know of my awful experience. When I got him on the phone I was told..."I'm new here and I'm trying, we have alot of problems that I am trying to straighten out." There was no apology for what had happened he just proceeded to tell me about all that he was up against in trying to run this place as a new manager. I could not believe it.
I am hoping that many people read this and NEVER have the Polvos experience that we did.
