The line is always long at this location, but luckily there is plenty of entertaining info and pictures on the wall. Weird is definitely the atmosphere, so don't expect a glazed Subway youth to serve you a sandwich, they'll chat you up and ask where you got that hat/jacket/chip on your shoulder.
Good food. Food is awesome. The staff is eclectic to say the least, but if you aren't a thin skinned little girl, it's not a big deal. Order your food and enjoy, ignore "cooler than you" attitude from staff. All Thunderclouds are like that.
Austin friendly?.
I have an issue with Thundercloud. My husband eats there twice a week at the Riverside location (just east of S. Congress). We live in the neighborhood behind this location, and one day I was out walking to the Town Lake trails. I am 7 months pregnant, and I walked in to ask them if I could use the restroom. As you know, pregnant women get the urge quickly and often. I was on foot walking, not in a car. They told me "no, you can not use our restroom". I asked again, "even for a pregnant woman". And they said, "No, only for customers."
OK....well I understand this, but sometimes you would think that people would have a little compassion for others. On top of that, we spend approx. $60.00 per month at this location on lunches throughout the month. But this particular day, I wasn't a customer, just a pregnant woman out walking trying to exercise that needed to use the restroom.
And Thundercloud claims to be a friendly, local business. They should be ashammed of themselves. I personally would never turn away a 7 month pregnant woman. And like I said, we were customers....just not that day. Since then, I can honestly say, I will never spend another dime there, much less the monthly $60.00 we normally spend (that is $720.00 yearly on lunches there).
Racism amongst Workers.
I been to this thunderclod location more than once. My first visit, although it was weird, was rhather descent. However, the econd time I visited this Thundercloud the customer service was very, very inappropriate and rude. Its was so overtly rude and degrading that i just knew the manager, who stood beside his employee, would speak up for what I witnessed. Not only did he first attempt to cover my sandwich with lettuce, but wehen he finished making my sandwhich he didnt even put in a bag. Nor did he ask me did I want a bag for my
sandwhich.
Now i been to more than one Thundercloud sub in Austin, and I've never not got a bag for my sandwhich, and if im correct, thats what Sub places do after they finish making your sandwhich. So I asked for a bag. When the worker gave me the bag, he opened the bag andsat ext to my sandwhich on the counter. At this point i was irriatated a little so i asked him could he place my sandwhich in the bag. However, when he put my sandwhich in the bag (rudely), he tossed my sandwhich on the counter as if i were a dog and it was raw meat. I was so shocked that i asked what was there managers name and number. It seemed like they gave me the wrong names and number. This place discussed me and i feel like no one should eat here. I didnt see nyone wash there hands, and the service was extremely rude!!!!!
Thundercloud Subs. Thundercloud subs is a great little funky sub shop that i love to go to. Pretty good subs, but not always the best service. I had the BLT on white, and it was delicous! The only thing was they gave it to me on wheat, and when i asked to change it, my server gave me the evil eye. I just didnt feel the love in the sub! hehe. Over all, good subs, fair prices, great atmosphere. Try it!
Central Texas must. Thunderclouds is and Austin staple. Its funky, austintacious and casual. I love their tuna melt sandwhich with a little cheese and mayo...yum! Great bread as well.
Really really good sub sandwiches. Unlike subway sandwiches, Thunderclouds puts meat in your sandwiches. And lots of it. There vegetables always taste fresh. Although it may sound like a weird combination, their avocado and roast beef subs are amazing. Two thumbs up for one of the best sub sandwich shops in Austin.
Nothing special. I don't get the hype about this place. I tried it for the first time today. I got the Veggie Delite. It was good, but ingredients didn't seem very fresh and it just seemed like a normal sandwich.
Love in a sandwich.
A haven for vegetarians:
the nada chicken sandwich is superb, as is the veggie delite (fresh vegetables with hummus or cream cheese and avacado) or try the soups (green chile corn).
Thundercloud is a sandwich shop that epitomizes austin culture.
Oh yeah dont forget the rockin music while you dine.
I'd rather get struck by lightening. Good sandwiches start with good bread and Thundercloud Subs lacks both. The ingredients weren't as fresh and the sandwiches more pricey than other sandwich shops. I'd rather try my luck at Quiznos with the scary singing and guitar strumming vermin. Thank goodness it's only found in Austin, because I would never want to find one in my city.
