What Our Expert Scouts Say

April 28, 2013

One of the oldest hamburger restaurants in America, Dirty's is one of the "holy trinity" of Texas burger classics -- the others being Chris Madrid's in San Antonio and Keller's in Dallas. Where is Dirty's in that mix? You'll have to decide for yourself.

Just what you need. I was craving a really good burger. I got the DH. It was so good like a patty melt. The only thing I added was ketchup. It was melt in your mouth good. The fries were great. I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food. The person who took my order over the phone was really nice as well.

Ah, for the memories. Reading these reviews brought back a lot of old memories. Grented, I haven't eaten at Dirty's in about ten years, but figured, based on the reviews, that my memories should stand the test of time.

I would class it as old-school. If you like neon and ferns and overly large plates dwarfing your table, then likely, Dirty's is not the place for you. Dirty's is nostalgia, not just for old Austin people who ate there years ago and keep coming back, but it is a nostalgic taste trip for anyone who wants to eat like anyone did in the 30s, 40s, 50s.

I hope they never close the place because the only other place that dished up such nostalgia and good food was The Stallion ... gone these 20+ years and still longed for. Greasy? Yes. Vitamin G my friends used to say. But it is a soul-filling comfort-food good that it is hard to get any place else. I can't wait for my next trip to Austin!

Greasy burgers in a no-nonsense eatery on the Drag.. In Short
Opened in 1926, Dirty's has long been a pilgrimage for visiting ex-Austinites as well as college students, blue-collar workers and a few old-timers who like joking around with the waitresses. The interior is basic burger stand: Formica counters, plastic booths, vinyl-topped stools, a foggy window looking out onto the Drag and framed, yellowed clippings and photos of famous patrons. The cooks prepare their small menu the classic way, with a deep-fryer and a large grill.

Zero. The people who gave this a good review had to be there in the wee hours of the morning and partied out. When they say Dirty they mean it. And don't buy the comments about a meaty burger because I swear Mickey Ds regular hamburger is just as big. Once was enough for this Longhorn.

Great Place Any Time Of Year.... Im in austin at least twice a month, if not more. I always visit DM's for the fact they have great burgers, excellent shakes and that "old school austin" atmosphere. Coming from a town where chains are the norm (Dallas), its great to have an haven for real food and great people.

THE BEST BURGERS IN AUSTIN, but.... They are kind of expensive by fast-food standards.

The notion that they are too small is frightening. These burgers are very greasy (yum) so they should not be BIGGER! Somebody might be more likely to have a heart-attack in the restaurant if they were bigger. Instead I would request that they would be a bit less costly.

Definitely Best Burgers in Austin. I have lived in Austin for 20 years and have eaten at all the recommended "Burger Joints" including Dirtys over the years. Recently I went back to Dirtys to check out all the buzz created by the remodel and new outdoor patio. The food is still TO DIE FOR! A recent review about the portions was totally incorrect (must have been written by someone who overeats). The portions are just fine.

The amazing thing about this place is that it has been in business for over 70 years and it is still going strong for 1 reason. THE FOOD! They have the freshest veggies and the meat is fresh (never frozen) according to our excellent waitress. The service is great - even when they are busy. Now that they have an outdoor patio with VERY COLD BEER - it is a great place to just hang out and people watch.

Not impressed. I don't see how this place gets ranked as having one of the city's best burgers. Burgers are small, the meat is a disagreeable gray color with no discernible flavor. Fries are above-average, lemonade is home-made and tasty.

So what's great about Dirty Martin's???. Well, since I discovered City Search I made it my personal mission to seek out the restaraunts listed and put them to a true test. But of course I realize "Opinions are Opinions." Order a double burger cause the regular are just plain too small. I still felt hungry enough to finish every last fry. The burger was good but the fry's where hard. I like the fact that tax is included with the listed price but come on, a $1.25 for a ice cream cone that has funny tasting ice cream??? But I recommend it for anybody with that flare, taste differs.

Greesy spoon. Dirtys is the ultimate greesy spoon, a term made a household word just about the time Dirtys opened for business so many decades ago. To this day, it is true to it's original roots. This BY FAR the best and most true to its roots burger in Austin, PERIOD!
