In Short – Larry Lingle opened the first Lobo in Dallas in 1973 and opened the Austin location in 1994. The unique selection of books are mostly by gay and lesbian authors and range from biography to erotic fiction, humor and spirituality. Used books include anthologies and gay/lesbian studies. Other items for sale include T-shirts, CDs, frames, candles, and buttons, plus Pride/rainbow-themed flags and stickers and same-sex wedding cake toppers.

Lobo sells greeting cards (including some racier ones), and adult films/magazines. It also rents traditional and adult films, so no one under 18 is allowed in the store.
