Momoko was one of the first places in Austin to ride the bubble tea wave, and since its opening, the menu at this West Campus outfit has exploded into a mind-boggling compendium of tea customization options: All teas (jasmine, green, black, chrysanthemum...) are steeped to order, the tapioca bubbles come in a variety of flavors, you can get candy bits, flavored powders -- you get the picture. The atmosphere is also a trip: Think Hello Kitty Goes to Tokyo.
Best Tapioca in Austin!!.
This is probably one of the best places for Tapioca that i've been to in Austin. They have more than 100 flavors of tapioca like Lil' Devil (or something like that), Tropical Dream, and Rose Tea. That's the real difference between Momoko's and places like Coco's. If you want to try something new and yummy, go to Momoko's and try Kokepan. If you want to get a standard milk tea...still go to Momoko's! The thing I liked about Momoko's tea was that they're made from freshly brewed tea! REAL tea in your milk tea is authentic milk tea!
They also serve riceballs. I had a friend who was japanese in high school, and I've had a few of her rice balls that she brought from home. Momoko's aren't 100% authentic "Japanese" but I'd say they're pretty close. You get a giant rice ball filled with salmon, cream cheese, and cucumber that's enough to keep you full for a hours. For $3.99 thats a pretty good deal if you ask me.
Momoko's also sells lots of little japanese gifts and stationary. I think it's one of the few in Austin, and it certainly is the closest to UT campus that does!
Lastly, sometimes it can take a while to get drinks, but don't let that deter you from stopping by. The experience is unique and Momoko's as the owner is there every day making the food and drinks. If it get's busy, it can take up to 15 minutes to get a drink, but if it's calm it can take 5 minutes. Definitely don't forget to tip the workers!
It's alright.
I haven't been in a few years (coming up on almost two years, to be precise), but my last trip was okay. All the merchandise is worth the trip alone, but the bubble teas and snacks? Nah
I prefer Coco Cafe's bubble teas by far--maybe I'm to simplistic for Momoko's odd flavors, who knows?
However, on my last visit, I had some bad luck. I had a riceball with eel in it, and later on that night was throwing up so hard that I had burst blood vessels in both eyes. (The week of my fish orientation at UT, oi.)
Don't take that to heart, though--that could happen anywhere. My main reason for not going back since is that it's a bit of a drive for me. I intend to go there soon to look at some of their plushies and whatnot, but I'm going to stay away from the riceballs (I found out that day that I don't care for eel, anyway.)
Good bubble tea, bad service. I have been getting bubble tea here at momoko since my freshman year of college in 2000. However, recently I decided to look for a new bubble tea joint do to poor customer service. The girls at the counter are rude and on at least 2 occasions it took me 15-20 plus minutes to get my drink. The last incident I had to just had to ask for my money back because I had to get back to work. I would understand if this was an isolated incident but unfortunately lately it has been the norm. The management needs to hire more people (and friendly ones at that) to meet the demands of its customers. What a disappointment :(
Best milk tea in Austin. Their milk teas are a bit pricier, but in my opinion it's worth it. The quality difference between Momoko and Tapioca House/Coco is pretty obvious (whatever Tap House uses as a creamer actually makes me sick), and their tapioca* are always perfectly cooked. (*citysearch won't let me type b@lls after tapioca--why is this an inappropriate word?)
Head here for Japanimation T-shirts, Hello Kitty-wear (and wares), Pokemon items and a cup of tea..
In Short
The tiny store is scented with Asian teas, boutique soaps and incense. Walk inside and find a great selection of toys and trinkets from your favorite Japanese cartoons. There are also Japanese candies, pens, pencils, jewelry and watches, toys, games and a unique atmosphere that's truly off the beaten path. A couple more steps will find you standing among the tables and chairs of the teahouse. Sit and sip or take some home for later.
Great Gifts!!. Today was my first visit to Momoko, and I must say, it was delightful. They have an amazing selection of Japanese and general Asian gift items, along with some quirky miscellaneous items that I have never come across anywhere else. My only complaint, was the service. The store has so much character, they should employ a staff that can live up to it. Attractive girl, but she would have served better as store decoration.
This place is fantastic!.
Best bubble teas I've ever had! Their pearls are always nice & soft! The Forbidden love is my favorite, nice fruity taste. The new Junky Raccoon is good, too, a nice caramel flavor - even my bf liked it and he hates tea! Teas run about $3.50-$4.50.
They have a ton of pens, stationary, stickers, origami papers, Hello Kitty stuff and Anime toys. Big fan of the Pocky & other candies too.
Only problem is that the descriptions of the teas are like "French Kiss - sweetest kiss you've ever tasted" instead of telling you that it's a French vanilla tea with flowery fruit bits. Staff is always super nice about answering questions, though, and they let you substitute with soy milk or no sugar or substitute sugars. Also, it's all made when you order it, so can take a while if there are a lot of people.
