Amazing selection of beads and jewelry supplies! Friendly staff and nice prices, especially when I'm feeling creative and just want to make something fun!
Great Bead Store for Beginners!.
First off, I should admit that I work there (as of this writing). But I don't think that means I can't be objective. I have frequented other bead stores in Austin, after all (and sometimes still do, sshhhh!)
So the pluses about Nomadic Notions: the service. We're encouraged and expected to greet every customer and really give them personal assistance, whether it's just helping 'em pick out beads and supplies, or walking them through the whole jewelry-making process. We've got a table with bead-trays and tools set up, so folks can walk in and make a piece right there. They can even bring in their own beads and do it, though naturally we'll expect 'em to buy SOMETHING from the store.
We've also got a whole array of classes, and the schedules usually feature 3-month stretches, so you can plan in advance. I've been making jewelry for 3 years, and believe me, I don't know how to make HALF the stuff my fellow Nomads teach. So it's an excellent opportunity if you're looking to expand your knowledge, or if you're just wanting to make a few cute presents for friends and family.
I guess the downside would be the price -- we're probably a bit pricier than some of the other bead stores in town. We may not have quite as wide a selection, either. But if you're a beginner at beading, Nomadic Notions is probably your best bet.
Hundreds of beads from around the world let you express your creative side while making beautiful, one-of-a-kind jewelry..
In Short
Nomadic Notions' relaxed atmosphere lends itself to a kind of "bead grazing" where you can mix and match from an assortment of glass, wood, bone, gemstone and metal beads from the four corners of the earth. Other offerings include hemp clothing, wood carvings from Indonesia and folk art pieces from Mexico. Handbags, wall hangings and masks from different countries and cultures line the walls. Musical instruments such as didgeridoos are tucked around the bead cases.
