Mi Madre's is a great breakfast/brunch/lunch spot. The food is great: their breakfast tacos are some of the best I've had in Austin. Some breakfast tacos can make me feel a little queasy in the stomach; something about the ratio of the cheese to the other ingredients perhaps, or maybe the way the beef is cooked. I've never felt this way about Mi Madres' tacos though: they are always delicious and crave-able. They're pretty big too! I also love the sopapillas (toasted fried bread sticks sprinkled with cinnamon-sugar and honey on the side for dipping) and the Mexican hot chocolate. The staff is fabulously friendly and very professional. I have never felt neglected or hurried at Mi Madre's, even when they're packed and have customers waiting to get in. I have noticed that the woman who is often behind the register is a little cooler than the other staff members, but, as another reviewer mentioned, her coolness is only noticeable because the rest of the staff is so friendly and cheerful. Frankly, if you're going to give a restaurant with amazing food and fabulous staff only three stars because the cashier was cold toward you, then perhaps you're the reason for her taciturn service! I also love the venue at Mi Madre's: the front of the business has five little tables set up diner-style, but then you go through the back and there's a large inside room with bigger tables and a more family-oriented atmosphere. Go through a little futher, and there's outside seating on the shaded patio, and the vibe out there is king of hip and "Austin-weird". Speaking again to the amazing service of the staff, I have not noticed a difference in service no matter where I sit. The only negative thing I would mention is that they're not open later; I'm definitely not a night owl, so Mi Madre's is often closed by the time I'd like to eat there. They're so good though, I might start getting up earlier!

Ok, I eat here all the time and have for years and love love this place like my own home. In terms of food: SALSA, THE BEST REFRIED BEANS (they say they're vegetarian--yee haw!), MIGAS TACOS (on corn)!!! And it all comes out of the kitchen pretty lightening fast and hot. Prices have gone up but I'm still loyal. The staff is amazing. I don't know why that guy said the owner woman was so rude beyond rude-- She's great. She has perhaps a cooler vibe than most everyone else in there, but it's her style. He must have royally disturbed her. She knows all her regulars by name and, really, her coolness is just relative cause everyone there is so damn nice and helpful. Her husband is a teddy bear. I love that staff. They are so attentive and warm and also know all the regulars names (and there are a LOT of regulars). The atmosphere is so relaxing and enjoyable. Make sure you take advantage of the back dining areas as it seems many think the restaurant is only in the front; and I believe the back patios are really where the magic happens. The staff doesn't flinch if you walk in by yourself and stay at a booth for 2 hours or if you comedown on the place with 20 of your closest friends and their newborn babies. They really role with it and NEVER serve you a plate of attitude. It's a good place for meetings, too, cause even when it's crowded it's always possible to hear and have conversation. If you're on the run, CALL IT IN! It's so convenient and everyone loves the friend who shows up with a bag of Mi Madre's tacos. It's true, there's lots of hipster taco places popping up all around East Austin. NOTHING beats the sweet piece of life that is Mi Madre's. It's the first stop for ex-Austinites on the way into town, and the last stop on the way out. Do it. Over and over.

Mi Madre?s is another restaurant that is fond of the tactic that I hereby dub ?thirding,? what this type of serving represents is when you order Migas and they take up only a third of the plate. Thusly the Migas had roughly a third of the plate to themselves and while they were certainly piled higher than the beans (not so much with the potatoes) they were hardly dominating the plate. Two forces were at work within the Migas: cheese and chips. Indeed the mound of Migas looked like a treacherous iceberg with vicious tortilla points poking out to stab your gums. Now it is worth noting that the tortilla chips were plentiful and were still extremely crunchy, and that they certainly had not skimped on the cheese. But there?s a problem ?you see, I haven?t mentioned any eggs yet. And rightly so because the proportion of chips to cheese to eggs was wildly off. The tomato and jalapeno chunks were easier to find than the eggs (and were very fresh). Frankly put the Migas at Mi Madre?s were more like a big plate of nachos with some eggs thrown in, than a plate of Migas. I know I?ve mentioned in reviewing other Migas that it is important for there to be lots of chips and cheese but the primary ingredient in Migas needs to remain eggs, and sadly Mi Madre?s Migas were lacking in that department. As for the sides: the creamy spicy beans were indeed creamy, spicy, and went mostly uneaten (though mixing them with some of the chips helped strengthen my nachos viewpoint). The potatoes were rather simple sliced and cooked potatoes which were made quite fine with some salt and pepper, and while they were not stellar breakfast potatoes they were not deceptive looking. Unfortunately those Migas looked delicious at first but beneath that thick blanket of cheese were no eggs. Deception!
