Tips for Aire Serv Heating & Air Conditioning of Austin

September 14, 2012

We had Aire Serv work on our home. Their bid, when compared to the other 2 bids we received, was in the middle on performance and cost. The work was done as described. However, there were some problems. We called for assistance, and Aire Serv fixed our problems at no additional cost to us. They also did additional work as well. A company can be measured by their reaction to adversity. Aire Serv responded very well to our request for support, and made it a high priority to satisfy us. In particular, the owner David Crunk attended and assisted the work, and personally oversaw all repairs. Taber, the service technician called upon to support as, was particularly helpful. We appreciate the work of Aire Serv on our home.

We had an air conditioner problem that required professional service. We did not select Air Serv. Our insurance company sent them. My wife had to deal with the technician (David) alone on his initial visit. Of all the service professionals we've ever worked with, this guy had the rudest and most disgustingly arrogant attitude. After she finally got him out the door, we called the company to see if they could get another professional out the same day to help. They refused. Very unprofessional and unhelpful.

Decent work, once they sent someone knowledgeable.... Aire Serv replaced a compressor for us the first week in July, and things seemed fine until yesterday, (9/12), when it quit cooling. My wife called American Home Shield, our warranty company, and requested that they send out Aire Serv again, to fix this new problem. She was told by AHS that Aire Serv wasn't taking warranty jobs at this time, and we were set up with another company.

I went out with the service guy when he arrived today, and was a little miffed to find out why the unit wasn't working. One of the three wires running to the compressor had fallen off, evidently having been only loosely attached originally. Upon further investigation, the other two wires were also loosely attached, and with 1/4" SHEET METAL SCREWS! The service guy was puzzled that these type of screws were used, and for a couple of reasons. First of all, the screws were all too small, and thus couldn't be tightened. But more importantly, these screws were used instead of the correct ones, which come packaged with compressors! So not only did the service guy use the wrong screws, he had to make an effort to NOT use the right ones! We also discovered a wire that was pinched when the Aire Serv guy put the fan back on the unit, a condition that would have led to the wire wearing through and eventually shorting out. I should have know the AS guy was a numbskull when he put the new compressor into place, then had to crawl into the unit to put the rubber feet on. I asked him if it wouldn't have been easier to put the feet on, and then place the compressor, and he said, "I guess so....".

9/15:

AireServe came out today, after the warranty company said they needed to fix their screwup, not the company that was out on 9/13. The service guy was very knowledgeable, apologized many times over, and stated that they had been lied to by the guy that was here in July; that he wasn't nearly as experienced as he said he was. Besides the screwups mentioned above, he had also soldered in a smaller diameter copper pipe, an action this guy said was illegal. They put in a brand new compressor, capacitor and copper lines, thereby fixing the mistakes made in July.

Overall, I was satisfied, but I would have preferred not to be the screener for their hiring practices; the guy that screwed up our house was fired that same week. And if you fire someone for gross incompetence, wouldn't it make sense to do a quality check on his jobs? Makes sense to me...
