Editorial Review for Musashino Sushi Dokoro – by Susan Kirr
In Short
Once a quiet place to get the real thing, Musashino is now a magnet for the monied after-work crowd. The decor of cedar paneling, paper lanterns and aquatic prints is enchanting, but the tables are a little too close together, and the disco music seems out of sync with the Japanese aesthetic. Teriyaki and tempura are available, but sushi is king. A 10-piece sushi deluxe features albacore tuna topped with shredded daikon.

After living in Tokyo with my husband for several years so my standard for sushi has increased from the California Roll to appreciating sushi for what it is: fish over rice (nigiri) or no rice at all (sashimi). 95% of sushi restaurants in Tokyo don't offer anything more but a tuna roll or a hamachi roll. Rolls with mango bits, cream cheese or spicy mayonnaise don't exist. Since I moved back to Austin, I've been to Musashino several times over and tried Uchi. Musashino offers an authentic Japanese ambiance with great sushi and consistently good service. The only negative I'd have is in their price. Musashino satiates the sushi craving just fine without the snob factor, more expensive menu, and long wait at Uchi.
Pros: Consistent standards of food and service
Cons: They do not take reservations

This place is undeniably the "gold" standard of sushi in Austin! The service is usually spot on and the sushi is devine to put it bluntly! You simply will NOT find fresher cuts of sashimi or sweeter Japanese rice in central Texas. The Texas Hybrid Roll is a must try and will send your taste buds on a roller coaster of tantalizing flavors of sweet then heat. The way to maximize your experience here is to get the Super Deluxe (Tokujo Nigiri), it comes with 10 pieces of sushi and a traditional roll of your choice. Paco the # 2 sushi chef will not lead you astray on this selection. Please take my word and dine at Musashino and you WON’T be disappointed!
