Once a quiet place to get the real thing, Musashino is now a magnet for the monied after-work crowd. The decor of cedar paneling, paper lanterns and aquatic prints is enchanting, but the tables are a little too close together, and the disco music seems out of sync with the Japanese aesthetic. Teriyaki and tempura are available, but sushi is king. A 10-piece sushi deluxe features albacore tuna topped with shredded daikon. – – High Marks – "...an authentic Japanese ambiance and satiates the sushi craving just fine without the snob factor..." The best I've ever eaten!
by CSMobileUser2 at Citysearch
The Sushi and Sashimi at Musashino are quite simply the freshest and most succulent I have eaten anywhere in the world - including Japan, which is amazing to find in central Texas. Compared to other places in town it's by no means cheap, but good Sushi and Sashimi is worth paying a little more for. Try the Spicy Scallop or the Spider Roll - they are to die for and I save them till the end of the meal. Their Unagi is also the best! Go on a Tuesday because they're closed on Mondays and everything is really fresh on Tuesdays!
This ex-californian was wowed

I really enjoy going out to eat, and recently moved from Los Angeles where I had the opportunity to eat fantastic sushi all the time. I ate at many of the "best" sushi restaurants in LA regularly.
Moving to Austin, one of my concerns was finding good seafood and sushi. I had been to Uchi, and sure, it was good. But it was not authentic, and their sashimi/sushi was OK.
And then I went to Musashino. My wife and I got the "omikase" tasting menu- not a cheap option, but the option that allowed the sushi chef to really show us his stuff. And show us he did! I cannot express to you how awesome it was. As we devoured the perfect, well prepared sashimi and sushi, my wife and I kept giggling to ourselves and reminding ourselves that we were eating this in Texas! We both agreed that Musashino was the best sushi we had ever had. I proceeded to interrogate the server and chef on how they possibly could manage to get this quality of fish flown in to central Texas. We vowed to go back and to go back often. It is obvious why this place was packed on a tuesday: those who really know sushi, know this place is the best in town.
- Pros: unbelieveable, perfect sashimi and sushi
- Cons: if you want Uchi, go there instead
