In Short – The open waters of Lake Travis are a short jaunt from the slips at this rental spot. Space for sailboats is plentiful and varied. The choice of destination is yours. Pass the North Shore nudists at Hippy Hollow, swing up to Carlos' and Charlie's for some nachos and a cold beer or circle and set anchor at Starns Island for an onboard picnic.
Editor's Tips
- Know Before You Go:
- Bring a pair of white-soled shoes, plenty of sunscreen, a jug of water and a big hat. Leave red wine and glass items behind, because accidents do happen.
- The Extras:
- The TSA offers sailing basics through sailing and navigational lessons. They also sell new and used boats and have boats available for charter.
Great place to keep a sailboat on Lake Travis

If you're new to sailing on Lake Travis, you probably want to keep your boat near Mansfield Dam because of the large basin there, and you'll want a marina that caters to sailboats, so you have three choices: Marshall Ford on the east bank or Commander's Point or the Austin Yacht Club on the west bank. If you join the Yacht Club, you're expected to race or volunteer a total of 15 days per year. If that's too much of a time commitment, then look into keeping your boat at one of the other two. We chose Commander's point because 1) They have a trolley on which you can send your gear up and down from the parking area to the slip area and 2) because Paul, the manager, is very laid back. The other boat owners we've met are very friendly. Aside from parking, trolley, showers, bathrooms and slips, there's not much there—no store, no picnic area, It's very bare bones, but it's a great base from which to enjoy Lake Travis.
Worst attitude in town - don't charter anymore :)!

These guys were terrible. Their boats were close to sinking, were filled with mold and apparently had never been cleaned, but the upside is that they quit chartering boats a few years ago.
