Editorial Review for McKinney Falls State Park – by Elizabeth McGuire
In Short
The 2.5-mile hike-and-bike loop winds through shade and sky among live oaks, Ashe juniper and mesquite trees, and in the spring, wildflowers. Along the trail are rock shelters--carved out by an insistent creek--that were once used by Native Americans. Remains of less primitive living are down the trail, where parts of the Thomas McKinney Homestead and Grist Mill still stand. On the north end of the park, the mountain bike trail accommodates both beginner and intermediate riders.

The best thing about this park is the location. It's a VERY short drive from town, yet feels very removed from the city. The falls are lovely, if you see them at the right time of year. Be careful on holiday weekends because the campsites tend to fill up quick. And once they are crowded, you tend to lose a lot of the camping feel. I like to take a day or two off and go during the week. Bring your bike or a good pair of shoes for the trail. The scenery here is beautiful.

Great place to bring your dog on a warm day. Although the water quality is sometimes a little iffy, the park is well-kept and hardly ever crowded.
Pros: inexpensive
Cons: falls often dry
