Austin >Brodie Animal Hospital
Not the best.....
We have been bringing our cats to BAH for several years. We did just switch vets, however, and I'm very glad we did.
BAH didn't do anything particularly wrong; their vets are knowledgeable and most of their techs are wonderful. The place, to us, is simply a bit too sterile (and by that I don't mean too clean ... I mean that there is a generic business feel to the place that leaves it and its employees somewhat distant and uncaring). There are, in my opinion, too many vets and techs working there. It feels a bit like a expensive chain store.
Their prices are expensive; and that's fine for some people. More important, however, was the care they offered our animals, which we found troubling and frustrating. BAH seems to hold the philosophy--which is perfect for many pet owners--that their job is prolong the pet's life, regardless of the cost of their quality of life.
For example, we brought one of our cats there four years ago. They told us she very likely had a terminal illness that would shorten her life to six months IF she underwent aggressive surgery and got an oxygen mask (and tank). We decided to take her home, watch her for signs of severe illness, and nurse her until it was "time." The vets at BAH gave us a good bit of guilt for this decision. The cat, by the way, is still alive and healthy, without oxygen masks or surgeries.
More recently, we had a critically ill cat who required full-time IV fluids and constant care, which BAH provided. He saw a different vet each day--and each vet offered us a different prognosis. When he wasn't showing signs of improvement, they suggested exploratory surgery. He was howling instead of meowing and barely able to move. It seemed to us that they simply weren't thinking about the cat's life, but about the _longevity_ of his life.
Again, we had a philosophical difference. Fine for some, but not for us.
Love these vets. This is by far the best vet care my pets have ever had. I feel lucky and I am appreciative of all the vets and tech's that work there. I had a 2 year old dog I had to put to sleep and they could not have been more supportive. The are kind, intelligent and stay on the cutting edge with new procedures and techniques. It appears the only thing people are concerned about is costs and waiting times, really!! I base my opinion ONLY on their extraordinary care and concern for my babies! Love them!!!!
Please do your research before thinking you know.
1. Dentals are expensive no matter where you go (some places more than others)
2. pets must go under anesthesia to have their teeth cleaned. You try cleaning a cat/dogs teeth with the same tools used for peoples and see how far you get.
3. Heartworm preventative is a PRESCRIPTION medication. You are required to have a negative heartworm test every year to continue getting it. If your dog happens to get heartworms and is given heartworm preventative, it can be fatal.
4. Many vet clinics are opting out of using PetMeds and other online pharmacies because of the recent legal issues concerning the quality of their products. If a vet gives the OK to refill meds, they become responsible for any issues that may arise from using medications.
5. When bought from a clinic, heartworm medication comes with a guarantee, i.e if your dog gets heartworms while on the meds, the company will pay for treatment. This is not the same for online pharmacies.

Go elsewhere. I have never been treated so poorly - they will berate you if you don't go through with their suggestions. They wanted me to pay over $350 to have my 8 yr. old dogs teach cleaned. They said she needed to be put under to have the procedure done. Right! Also, I asked them not to take a heartworm test because she took heartworm pills and they performed the test anyway and charged me for it. They refused to take the charge off and also, as stated in another review, refused to approve an online purchase for flea prevention and heartworm that was cost effective. These people think they are above their customers in every way and I wouldn't waste my time. You will end up going somewhere else.
TO EXPENSE. I agree with grossly overcharging posted 10/2008. This is exactly what happened to me with my diabetic 12 yr dog. They do not like for you to use PetsMed even though they are cheaper and the Meds are pkg in ice packs and overnighted- i.e.Brodie $50.00 a vial - Petmeds overnights $38.00 a vail total on multi , I go through a vial every 31/2 weeks you do the math and Brodie had the nerve to hand me a letter about this. Watch out if you have several animals and they need rabies shots they will set up a appointment for each dog and charge office call and shot on each animal so shots can really be costly. They are all except one Vet I found very pushy on you need to do this and you need to that and it alls amounts to more $$$$$$$$$$$ be prepared to pay big if you use their services
Nice people but grossly overcharging the customers. I previously lived in Northwest Austin and took my pets to Northwest Hills Vet clinic, a clinic at which I was highly impressed with. My wife and I moved to South Austin six years ago. Upon the recommendation of a friend I took my two dogs in for their annual shots and was charged over $500. I felt like that was exhorbitant and started going back to Northwest Hills. Recently I decided to give Brodie Animal another shot. Although the staff is very nice they again charged me in excess of $500 for the annual visit. I also had to wait nearly two hours beyond the time of my scheduled appointment because the only vet on duty had a trauma emergency. I realize that trauma takes precedence, but was slightly put off that they only had on vet available on a Saturday morning. Northwest Hills always had multiple vets on duty so that if an emergency situation arises they could at least have someone else available to help you out. In addition, as I waited to check out after my two hour wait, the assistant at the counter (also very nice) took more than fifteen minutes to get my paperworkd processed and take my payment. Brodie also recommended that my pug get a teeth cleaning and extractions of two molars. The estimate on the cleaning and extractions was $1200. I called Northwest Hills the following day without divulging any amounts or that I had already received another estimate they quoted me a price less than half that amount. Brodie, nice people, but they are clearly overcharging their customers, and the service is a little slow and mismanaged. I would like to recommend them since they are friendly but the pricing is ridculous.
Too big for their britches. I've been taking my animals to Brodie for 3 years now and much like the Westgate Vet Hospital (where we were before), Brodie Animal Hospital has also gotten too big for their britches. I loved the care my animals were getting from the entire staff and it was priced reasonable enough but the bigger they have gotten, the more expensive they have gotten. We have started feeling more like a number (or a boat payment). Goodbye BAH.
By FAR, the BEST VET in Austin!.
This hospital has always been, by far, the best in Austin. They genuinely care, they're professional, and they work hard to insure that your pet is healthy. I've read some negative reviews regarding cost- well, you get what you pay for and BAH is 100% worth the cost. I'm a strong believer that if you can't afford GOOD healthcare for your pet, you probably shouldn't HAVE a pet.
Thank you, Brodie, for being "top dog"!
you get what you pay for-if you want quality attention-go to brodie animal hospital.
i love & trust brodie'. they have been so good to me & my dogs.i have adog with cancer & they have fit me in during a crisis at 15 min. before closing on a sat. I ADORE DR.WERNER!!!!!!after talking to him, i feel very uplifted ,taken care of & understood. i think these vets are very knowageable & open to learning new treatments.AS LONG AS DR> WERNER IS AROUND, I WILL BE TOO! sincerely, nancy miller, tigger miller,&
Wow, be prepared to takeout a loan once you get the bill.
I was shocked. They need to check to see if you are driving a Rolls-Royce before the appointment.
