The Place in Austin that Holds my Loyalty – I've been going to Hunan with my family for many years. Many many many many years. The food is consistently good, and they even have a few Korean favorites of mine, namely the noodles with black bean sauce (which has the best noodles I have ever had ever ever ever). I love Hunan, and will continue to go there year after year, and hopefully it will be around when I have my own family, so I can take them there as well. It's a great place, overall.
Bad place – I decided to go there onesay and their food tastesld really odd and I didn't like the service.
Love it! – We are from California and have lived in South Austin for the last 3 years and this is the ONLY place we get our Chinese from.
Exceptional Taste, Amazing Value – Don't let the "hole-in-the-wall" appearance fool you. Hunan Restaurant has great-tasting Chinese food. My family has been going there for years, and we've always gotten delicious, authentic-tasting meals, speedy service, very reasonable prices, and among the largest portions we've seen. The lunch menu (which costs $6 - $7 for huge portions, served until 2:30 PM) is a great way to feed hungry teenagers on weekends. My favorite entrees are the less mainstream dishes like Home Style Bean Curd ? spicy, fresh-tasting, and loaded with veggies.
Great food, Exceptional Prices – I am not exactly sure why the other individuals posting reviews of the Hunan restaurant are so negative. The first reviewer sounds like she/he is more concerned with asthetics as to the quality of the food. And he/she is obviously exaggerating. If you complain that the more than generous portion comes in a large styrophome container, rather than a "cute" little box, then you have immediately lost my respect. If you think about it, most people only take the time to review something when they dislike it. It appears that this is only the 4th review total. The employees at Hunan in South Austin deliver impeccable service and are all extremely friendly. One of the most recent reviewers (who I know very personally) has questionable taste at times but she just can't help it. She always orders something that she doesn't like, proceeds to eat all of mine, and is always more than satisfied with my chosen dish. I have come to expect this and have learned to deal with it. Please don't base your decision on previous reviews; honestly, words can't express how fantastic this restaurant is. You will just have to try it for yourself!
Why is it still open? – My boyfriend loves this horrible place! I still can't figure out why. He is impressed by how MUCH food you get for $6 (during lunch)- - Sound like anyone you know? Who cares what it tastes like, look how much you get!
Everytime he wants to eat there it causes an argument. Because unlike him, I'd rather taste my food than overindulge in it.
To please him, I have tried several things there. To mention a few: mongolian beef- when that made me gag I switched to Mongolian Chicken--nope. General TSO chicken-- unlike any I had ever had, and not in a good way. Chicken and broccoli--can't mess that up, right? Wrong! Everything is terrible. It all tastes the same but they throw different "vegetables" in for decoration, or maybe to add items to their menu. In conclusion, it's all the same thing. And guys, don't ever bring a lady there, especially not for dine in service! You'll know why when you get there.
Oh- I almost forgot, if you HAVE to eat there, just stick to the soups. They're ok.
Avoid During Business Hours – Being new to the area, I've been trying a bunch of local places and I have to say this is the worst Chinese restaurant I've been to... ever. (The empty parking lot should have been warning enough.)
I ordered the orange peel beef and some crab rangoon to go. The crab rangoon was your typical Sysco fare -- okay, not great -- but the orange peel beef was astonishingly unappetizing. It was the sort of dish that makes you wonder how a restaurant stays in business.
Upon opening the styrofoam container (not a cute, cardboard to-go box), I was greeted by what looked like pieces of beef jerky swimming in a dark, unnaturally-colored sauce, topped off with orange peels -- not orange zest or minced, diced, chopped, or julienned peels, but what appeared to be the discarded remnants left by someone who decided to eat an orange (no straight lines to indicate a knife or other utensil was used to remove the peel... I only hope the guy in the kitchen sterilized his hands in boiling water before gouging his nails into the rind).
Then, in spite of my better judgment, I tasted it. I took one bite, chewed for a moment, then my body hastily rejected the food into the trash can, along with the rest of it in the container.
Now, this part may or may not be related, but I found myself nauseated and retching sick about twenty-four hours later.
I know this all sounds dramatic, but it is not at all an exaggeration. This was an exceptionally bad experience.
Does this place get any repeat customers? If so, please share what you like about them and what dishes you've tried.
Teriyaki Chicken – I love teriyaki chicken. It's on the menu, but everytime I try to order it I am told that they don't have any. Of all the times that I have gone there, I have only been able to order it once. Even then, a big deal was made that they made it for us. I just tried calling to order some but I was again told that they don't have any. Why put this item on the menu if you are not going to serve it. 1/3 of the menu is chicken. I don't understand why this would be missing. In any case, what I have eaten was great. I have no other complaint besides that.
Editorial Review by Citysearch Editors – A dimly lit but casual family-oriented affair, serving affordable lunch and dinner platters like sweet-and-sour chicken and beef-and-broccoli.
