Editorial Review for Bakehouse Restaurant & Bar – by Tara Hall
In Short
Upon first glance, the Bakehouse is a place you'd expect to find authentic American comfort food, not the wide array of international dishes the menu offers. But the variety begins to make sense after noticing the decor--vintage airline posters advertise faraway places, National Geographic maps line the walls, globes creatively crafted into lamps light each booth. The overwhelming menu features smoked sausage crisps, burgers and classics like chicken-fried steak.

Insider Tips
Know Before You GoTry and save room for their deep-fried custard--much like fried ice cream, the outside is crisp, the inside oozes with creamy pudding.
The ExtrasThe friendly staff is happy to prepare meats and meals for special events and holidays.

There are lots of interesting, delicious sounding items on the Bakehouse's menu. I loved the decor. However, the overall effect of the food was bland and lacking. My wife's bratwurst was great, but all of the side dishes, including the warm potato salad (which was described as "heaven" by our server) were acceptable, not memorable. I had a chicken florentine, stuffed with spinach and cheese. Very little flavor. I've had truly bad meals, and this was not one of them. There were many good sounding items on the menu. I wouldn't drive far to give it a second chance.
Pros: decor was great, brats were tasty
Cons: flavor of everything else.

The Bakehouse menu is way too ambitious. I oder one thing only here: the chicken fried steak. This is the best CFS in Austin and one of the better ones in Texas. The meat is real round steak, not cube steak, and the batter is good. Not perfect like my grandma used to make-but good. The cream gravy is perfect. Stay away from the international stuff. I do disagree with the reviewer who disliked the sausage crisp. It is a pretty good dish. The only thing that I would order if I didnt want CFS. Unfortunately, criticism of the staff is not unfounded. As far as I can tell the owners have always had problems keeping good waiters and waitresses. I dont let it bother me though. I will put up with a lot for decent cream gravy.
Pros: Funky place with lots of Keep Austin Weird vibes.
Cons: Funky place with lots of Keep Austin Weird vibes.
