Editorial Review for Wild Basin Wilderness Preserve – by Citysearch Editors

In Short
There aren't many cities that can boast 227 acres of preserved, pristine country so close to downtown. The two-and-a-half miles of hiking trails lead through a variety of terrains: woodland, grassland and streamside. The year-round calendar of events includes stargazing, moonlighting, native plant walks and guided tours. Wild Rock Walks are held the last Saturdays of the month, when families hike the trails and learn about the habitat.

This is the best place to spend a Saturday hiking through the hills. Tons of native plants & wildlife, as well as streams. Only one downside: Sections of the preserve are close to 360 & you can hear passing traffic. Other than that, this is a beautiful place that I would recommend to everyone. One of Austin's best kept secrets!

I like Wild Basin because it's relatively close to town. It's a step up from Austin's greenbelts, but not quite as remote as somewhere like Enchanted Rock. One really neat thing is every halloween, volunteers make a haunted trail for kids and adults alike. It's a lot of fun for the little ones and it's a lot different than a haunted house because it is in a forest with that whole "Blair Witch" thing going.
