What Our Expert Scouts Say

Avenue B Grocery & Market

Excellent sandwiches made by a staff that clearly cares about their product. The location is like something out of the 50s - a quaint general store selling all sorts of foods, leather goods, and drinks. Perfect lunch spot - eating a delicious sandwich at picnic benches under tall trees.

The cutest grocery store in town. If you're not looking for it, you just might miss it as it easily resembles some of the surrounding old home in Hyde Park. Aside from being the oldest convenience store in Austin, Avenue B is known for its legendary sandwiches and friendly service.

Avenue B Grocery was built in 1909, and is one of Hyde Park's most precious gems. As anyone who's ever been here knows, sandwiches are an absolute must: Order the "Queen B," slathered with three cheese, avocado, mushrooms, and jalapenos.

SO Charming!. The oldest convenience store in Austin. The owner is adorable, and makes the best sandwiches! Perfect for a spring day or quiet lunch

Wonderful sandwiches, delightful place.. The sandwiches here are really the best! All the ingredients are so fresh and the prices reasonable. I recently tried a turkey sandwich, usually pretty standard fare, but with the store's garlic habanero mayo - WOW, so GOOD! This place is a gem to be treasured and supported. Hyde Park hasn't been my neighborhood since school daze long ago, but I make so many shopping trips nearby it's nice to take a break, have a sandwich under the trees and remember all the things I love about living in Austin, then and now. Good food and a soul centering atmosphere - Austin at it's best!

My Favorite Sandwich. I have been going to Avenue B for 9 years. The owner Ross has become the friend I visit when I want good conversation and a great sandwich. I was hooked when the first time I went in, I had this amazing salmon and bacon sandwich and Ross stumped me on Texas history. Ever since, I have brought visiting friends from out of town to show them how we do things here. They are charmed by the antique grocery and the neighborly attitude. Not to mention those darn good sadwiches. Mmmm!

This small wood-framed grocery store has been a Hyde Park fixture since 1906.. In Short
This is the oldest operating grocery store in Austin, as well as the longest-established business. The grocery makes wonderful sandwiches, including the popular king combo (meat and cheese) and the queen bee (a vegetarian sandwich). In the winter, Avenue B makes fresh soup daily and a pot of chili on Saturdays. They'll even serve you a Frito pie. With sandwich and beverage in hand, grab a seat at the picnic area.

Neighborhood Sunshine. I like this little place with it's perfect park benches outside to enjoy you sandwhich, made by Ross himself usually! I've been shopping here for years, you should definitely try a BLT or one of his excellent home-made (literally) soups. Plus Ave B stocks some of the best beers and wines in town.
