What People Are Saying About Mothers Cafe & Garden

In Short – Whether you're a vegetarian or not, Mother's Cafe is a destination. The large booths and sounds of clinking flatware give the ambience of a well-established diner with the fresh fare of a cafe. Regulars enjoy the "garden" out back--private tables in an atrium filled with plants and a trickling fountain. The extensive menu offers lots of pastas and stir-fries, plus barbecue tofu and a spinach-mushroom enchilada with fresh veggies and your choice of sauces.

Editor's Tips

Know Before You Go:
Don't shy away from eating out because you're alone. Mother's has a lunch counter where you can enjoy a meal with quick service.
What to Drink:
Try a smoothie or a beer from the impressive drink menu.

Our favorite place!

by LAB in Austin at Citysearch

Upon moving to Austin 2 years ago, we decided to try out the closest vegetarian restaurant to our house, Mother's Cafe. It was AMAZING. Since then, we have gone back at least 2 times every month. My husband loves the BBQ tofu plate, and I always get the bueno burger, the best vegeburger in town. Yes, we have had some waitresses who are slow to refill our waters, but, in general, we have always had great servers. We just moved out to Leander, but I know we will be making several trips to town to go back to our favorite place!

  • Pros: amazing vegie food, relaxed atmosphere
  • Cons: we live too far away

Not a vegitarian, NO PROBLEM U WOULD NEVER NO THE DIFFERENCE

by cocoapuff882004 at Citysearch

I love meat, but one of my friends is taking me to different vegitarian and vegan resteraunts so that I can learn to be open minded... I loved Mothers the food was so GOOD!!! You would never know the difference. I didn't feel bad about being stuffed and full. For desert we had a piece of chocolate VEGAN cake... OMG can you say orgasm in your mouth!!! I had a great experience I would recommend it to anyone.

  • Pros: Friendly staff, Relaxing atmosphere, AMAZING FOOD
  • Cons: None

This is my favorite!

I have loved the artichoke heart enchiladas ever since I can remember! I was so sad when this place burned, but I'm thrilled to see that it is back and running. I was in Europe for a few years and when I came back, the first place I wanted to go was Mother's. Their enchiladas are amazing, but their vegan chocolate cake is even better! Top it all off with a hibiscus iced tea and you have my preferred meal!

I would prefer no fluroescent lighting and I think the tables are too close together, but come on, there is a fish pond! It evens out but all in all, this is my favorite place in Austin!

  • Pros: Delicious vegan cuisine! Fish pond!
  • Cons: Bad lighting. Crowded tables.

Decent healthy food, bad experiences

by jonbolden at Citysearch

I live in Hype Park and used to frequent Mother's cafe. I was usually by myself. The last seven times I've been there, I'm almost always treated with contempt. I assume it's because i'm alone and their tip is going to be less than a big table. I like to go there for tea and dessert sometimes and I always get a dirty look or forgotten. One time, I waited almost 45 minutes for food and it wasn't busy at all. And I was really nice about it, but they didn't seem to care. I'm tired of the attitude. Too bad, the food is pretty good.

  • Pros: Healthy, wide selection, peaceful
  • Cons: Rude Snobby Staff
