I love Hancock. I have a soft spot in my heart for Hancock - when I was first learning how to play, it was the only course where I didn't feel stressed out about how terrible I was. Yes, the fairways often are neither fair nor a way at all, but the greens are usually in good shape (sometimes better than I've seen at other courses with a much more stellar reputation and price), and play is challenging on 2, 3, and 5. Walk it in autumn twilight with some buddies and a flask, or early on a crisp sunny morning, and it's difficult to have more fun for the price at any other course.

Friendly practice course. Ok, so this isn't your typical country club golf course. It's fairways aren't well maintained and the holes are pretty short and close together (as you can read in other reviews). Pretty much all the greens have a serious slope to them and are tough to play. A few of them are on top of big hills and if you miss the green at all, your ball is going for a long ride down the hill. But you can walk the course and probably play all day if you wanted to for just $10. I enjoy it because it's close to home and extremely easy to get in and play. Nice views on holes 6 and 8, you can see the downtown Austin skyline over the treetops. So no, it's not for the pros, but it's a fun and convenient place to just get out and knock some golfballs around and get some exercise. Also good for beginners because you won't feel alot of pressure at this course like you might at some really nice (and expensive) course.

This small, but challenging course allows novices to hone their skills without leaving the city limits.. In Short
This nine-hole course was built in 1899. The short course makes up for its deficiency in sand traps with an abundance of trees and forest growth, rolling hills and water hazards and, if you happen to hook your tee shot out of bounds, neighborhood pavement. While Hancock won't impress the country club set, it's a short, challenging range for no-frills beginners who are working their way up to (or saving for) the more refined courses.

Gotta Love the Location and the Price. OK seriously, it's not a horrible course...it's not the best public course in Austin by any stretch of the imagination either. Hancock is compact, short, and the greens are hard, but it's inexpensive and conveiniently located in Central Austin. Other golfers I've run into on the course are generally pretty nice, tee-times are easy to come by, and you can walk nine in a little over an hour depending on who's in front of you. At $8.50 it's a steal, and way more entertaining than going to the driving range.

Only if you're desparate. This is as ghetto a course as there is in Austin. In fact, its pretty hard pressed to even be considered a "course." Its more like a really big park with 9 holes as its attraction. At about $1 per hole, its a bit pricey. However, all negatives aside, it's nice to be able to pay and play 9 holes when you're pressed for time. But that alone doesn't really make it worth the trip.

Hancock #1? Yea Right!. Although Hancock is the oldest golf course in Austin and was the original Austin Country Club 100 years ago, it is not worthy of the #1 public course in town.

It's not even in the top 20!

First of all, it is only 9 holes and they are far from "strong". Only the par-5 2nd has any character what so ever as it is totally "risk-reward".

I have lived in Austin for 15 years and if a friend ever drives in from out of town, I NEVER in a million years would suggest Hancock as a final golf destination. Granted it has a ton of history and it definitely has its place, however to be ranked #1 is absolutely ludicrous.

DATED. I USED TO PLAY WHEN LIVED IN AUSTIN HOW CAN THIS RATE OVER THE OTHER OUTSTANDING PUBLIC COARSES.

Hanrock. For novices and beginners this is not a bad course, in fact I wish they were required to play there until at least etiquette and pace of play become as much a part of there game as trying to lower there scores.

But for anyone to rate this course above any of the others listed is ridiculous. Fairways are hard and little maintenance is done to the course other than mowing. It is a nine hole course cut down from the original 18 that was the first Austin Country Club.

Body Armor. I agree the course may be cheap and for th novice golfer a good choice. But the course is so compact that you are in great danger of being hit by other golfers. I would not recommend for the intermediate golfer. Beginners only..
