Best Chinese or Taiwanese restaurant in Austin. As a native Taiwanese, this place is the best, most authentic Chinese or Taiwanese place in Austin! Food is very authentic and reasonably priced. The owner and chef are super nice: you can call and pre-order dishes that are not on the regular menu and for a large group you can discuss with them to get a pre-set menu for the group. I organized several large group dinners there with a customized menu and got a very good price per person for the quality and amount of food we had!
If you're looking for authentic-.
this is the place to go in Austin. You have to ask for the Chinese menu and there you will find a treasure trove of authentic dishes. My family and I just moved from the bay area, CA and were searching for replacements for our favorite digs around the bay area. We were delighted to see steamed pork dumplings, various Chinese Greens, gai lan (Chinese broccoli) and baby bok choy sauted with garlic, bean curd knots with pork, scallion pancake, to name a few. The staff is eager to please, the place is clean, and the food is fresh. We will drive all the way across town to eat here frequently.
If you like real Chinese, try China Palace.
Real, Authentic Chinese Food.
Really good, authentic Chinese food. I grew up in Houston and spent the last 5 years around San Francisco. China Palace is, surprisingly, comparable in quality and taste to what you can find in Bellaire (Houston) or Cupertino (Bay Area). Ask for the Chinese menu, which is smaller, but has the real stuff on it (there is also English on it, but the translations will seem rather oblique if you're not already familiar with what normal Chinese people eat). The Chinese menu options are roughly Taiwanese - sanbeiji, shacha niurousi, that kind of thing. The manager sounds like she's from Taiwan, but I can't place the waitress. The staff is quite friendly.
The ambiance is a little lacking, but the place is clean. Besides, as any good ABC knows, at Chinese restaurants ambiance is generally inversely proportional to taste. The prices are reasonable: $7-$10 for a standard dinner dish.
I haven't tried either the buffet or the English only menu.
Good food consistently served in Central Austin. I have been eating at this restaurant since the late 70's. (Ok, I'm old.) But I have to say that, although there have been a few changes in management, the food has always been very good. Whether I dine in with a friends or get something to go, the food is always good. The service is pretty good, too. I can't comment on the buffet because I don't do buffets, but apparently they have been rated by the Chronicle for their buffet. I recomment the Happy Family and all the shrimp dishes.
Wonderful A+++++. As a native San Franciscan living in Austin, I was desperate to find a true Chinese restaurant of the caliber I grew up eating at. China Palace on Airport more than satisfied my quest. Truly delicious Chinese food and all the regional favorites like Hunan and Szechuan specialties. China Palace is spotless and the wait staff friendly as can be. I highly recommend China Palace.
