Tips for Pappasito's Cantina

Mourn Your Loss. The Pappas family have always sustained some of the best restaurant experiences I have encountered in life. I first ate at Pappasitos in Houston during the late 1980's. When the menu changed, some years back, the quality started to fall off. Tonight, I ate at the location in Austin. The chicken enchiladas, with the red sauce, were still pretty good; however, the hard shell chicken taco: a) had no red sauce; b) tasted very bland & c) was not as good as Taco Bell. The recipe for the Charo beans was rather boring & tasteless. The reason I am writing this review centers on the horrible fajitas that my wife ordered. In the past, not many Tex-Mex chains touched Pappasitos with their deep-charred flavor that was out of this world. Now, they have none of that taste. I would find better fajitas in the meat counter at HEB. No more Pappsitios for me. It is not worth the money they want. Is corporate falling asleep & not monitoring quality? Something has changed in this restaurant chain and it is not good. When taste goes south, corporate is usually involved. Think of it this way, if the Colonel were alive, he would die from what is being served at KYC. The same goes for the Pappas chain.

Best Fajitas around. The fajitas here are the best I have ever had. The tortillas are homemade, the meat is always tender (beef or chicken), and it comes with the melted butter sauce! Hot roasted salsa is awesome, top shelf margaritas are large and potent (better be for 10 bucks!).

The tableside guac is great, and so is their tortilla soup!

Kinda weird that you have to pay extra for cheese and sour cream for the fajitas... really? Oh well, it's still worth it!

Yup - Its #1. I like keeping Austin Wierd, but when it comes to my food, I prefer my waitress not to have armpit hair. The food is ALWAYS GOOD. Service is EXCELLENT and worth every penny. I have NEVER been disappointed.

Come ON!?! #1? REALLY?. I mean really?!! A chain restaurant is number 1 in austin? Papasitos?

what about Polvo's, Fonda San Miguel, Vivo's, Guerro's, La Feria, Maudies, Trudy's, El Arroyo, El Mercado, and even Baby A's is better....

I can't believe papasitos is number one without paying someone for editorial spot. Keep Austin Weird!

Worth the wait. My husband and I have eaten here several times. Since this is the only location in the Austin area, we've had to wait to be seated each time. But the food and service has made up for it. We love their Table-Side Guacamole! We enjoy their Tex-Mex Combination plates. During our last visit, we had the Quail (first time at this restaurant) and it was delicious! They serve great food and the portions are generous. The only complaint I have is that there should be more locations in this area.

Avoid Pappasitos for Dinner Parties. We booked the small party room at Pappasitos and were very disappointed. No one told us that the room had a door that opened to the hotel next door. There were people coming in and out of our party the entire time we were there. We asked the waitress to prevent people from interrupting our party, but we still had people coming through. It got so bad that when I tried to tell someone that we were having a party and that they needed to go around, the man tried to slam the door on me. The manager did not come over until I asked for him and then all he did was apologize and lock the door. Our party was already over. It was a horrible experience and I don't understand why the doors weren't locked to begin with. I would not recommend Pappasitos to anyone having a dinner party!

I'm in heaven!. Im new in town and Pappasitos is one of the restaurants near my hotel. First I looked at the menu on their web-site, it looked very interesting.

So the other night I walked over its just a couple of doors down. Parking lot looked crowed but after walking up to the door and being greeted, I saw that even though the parking lot was full the inside had more than enough room and no wait. So I set my self down and was immediately greeted by Brianna, who is a nice, cheerful young lady, with salsa and chips. I was looking at the drink menu and ask her what her favorite was and she said that they were all good, but she preferred the Horny Toad Margarita which is reasonably priced ($7.95) and when served was quite delicious; I actually had two that evening. Next the Chile con Queso (Medium) for $5.45, was very good you can order a large size and add either spicy ground beef or beef fajita to it for an extra price. For my entree, I decided to go with the Guadalajara Platiollos Combinados (Combination Plate), which is two cheese enchiladas, a crispy taco (beef or chicken) and tamale (chicken or pork) with rice and beans for $12.95. I chose the beef taco and the pork tamale as my options, and Im really glad I did the taco was ground beef nice and crispy (you can order soft if you prefer) and the pork tamale was melt in your mouth tender. Having spent the last 22 years in San Diego where you get shredded beef and pork, this was heaven.

I highly recommend Pappasitos and will go back again and again.

GREAT FOR LARGE EVENTS-A ++++++++. My husband and I hosted my sons rehearsal dinner there in March and we were blown away with everything. Becky, the banquet coordinator, took care of everything, all we had to do was show up and enjoy the evening. The food & service were outstanding! We have been regulars for years and continue to do so. A +++++

pappasitos is the king of Tex-Mex. Pappasitos is the best Tex-Mex in town. The food is outstanding, the service is wonderful and the environment is exciting. I have been there several times and they will gladly take a party of 20 or 2. I recommend to go many times and try a little bit of everything. I can not wait to go back!!!!!!
